Why does he say that? Is he an experienced rotary mechanic? Dizzy rarely need replacing.

^^^^ What is the reason he's giving. The only real problems these dizzys have are igniters that fail occasionally, which can be replaced. Every once in a while a vacuum canister for leading or trailing ignition is found to be defective. They have a bearing plate the pickup coils ride on that can get sticky and cause some driveability issues. This can be remedied by pulling dist apart, removing bearing plate and cleaning out the old dried up grease for the bearings and packing in new. The grease gets so hard, bearings can't overcome the resistance and bearing plate will not move smoothly,if at all. Symptoms; inconsistent idle speed, slightly sluggish acceleration, possible lessened fuel economy. The distributor assembly, new,is quite expensive. Used units can be sourced, there are rebuilts available,a lot don't come with igniters, you need to transfer your existing ones over to replacement. Consult with your guy as to his reason(s) for replacement.

Also subscribing for the reasoning behind the distributor necessity, usually they're just fine and many of us are still running units that are 30+ years old on our modified cars still.
