Looking for bigger rear end gears for GSL-SE

I think the Kia Sportage gears fit the FC differentials correct? But would they work in a GSL-SE differential?
Or would someone have a recomendation where I could find 4.88 - 5.00 ring and pinion for the SE?

Thanks!

There was a thread on that a while back. If I remember right the answer is yes.

Others have tried using bigger gears before, but found the loss in power and fuel economy really sucked...

not loss of power but more like having a governor on the freeway if youre using a 4.78 as you will be out of gears by the time you get to 80mph. 4.44 is different, I have taken my FB to about 130. But on the other hand, 4.78 is fun on the street

The Kia Sportage directly fits the FB rear end IIRC, not the FC diff. The FC diff has a long pinion shaft, whereas the FB is a short shaft, not compatible at all.

Guess I should have explained first..

This is not for a street car, drag project only, so I dont care about fuel economy or whatever lol.

So you think the Sportage ring and pinion will directly fit eh? which years and models should I look for in the scrap yards.

Oh, drag car eh? lol. In that case, just search for "kia gears" or something like that. Several threads on the subject going into great detail w/pics and everything if I remember correctly. There might even be a writeup in the Archive now that I think about it. But yeah, the Kia gears are probably what you're looking for....

You'd best just get a 8.8 ford.... the stock rear end isn't suited for constant drag racing....

Its an All Motor drag car, so I'm not too worried about breaking it. We're getting upgraded Moser axles for it.

Things I would consider

The KIA front diffy has a 7" ring. Im not sure if it the FC has the same size. The issue as others have mentioned is the short pnion shaft VS long for FC. Im not sure either if the pre-86's diffy housing will bolt up to a FC.
