Looking at a 1st gen

There's one for sale in my area- $3400 he's asking. 1984. It has 145k miles. He was unsure of the model, but thought it was a GL (so I asked him if it was the "GSL" and he said that sounded right). He said he has all the documentation, and that numerous parts have been replaced (too much to list). It's been serviced only at the dealership. He was preparing it for his daughter, but his daughter didn't want to drive stick. Of course, that's all I drive!

I like the car and would LOVE to have it, but thought that $3400 was perhaps too much. What do you think?

1984 Mazda RX7 - Immaculate 1984 Mazda RX7- Total time capsule.Purchased from Menlo Mazda.Exclusively dealer serviced. All documented maintainance and service records including original bill of sale and owners manual. Car has had no expense spared in keeping it in virtually brand new condition. Virtually eveything that rolls and moves has been replaced. Way way to much to list. This car is immaculate and always garaged. No dents or dings in creme exterior.Paint is excellent. Brown cloth upholstery looks brand new.Just completed dealer inspection. NO work needed. No parts to replace. Sunroof,A/C,5 speed transmission, disc brakes. I gave this car very recently to my daughter for her first car but shifting gears is too much for her right now.Car is located in Woodside.

sounds a little high unless its a super clean GSL-SE. Just look at the badging or the engine to see what model it is. 12A (carbed) will be a GS or GSL, and 13B (fuel injected) will be a GSL-SE

Yeah, how the guy described it sounded like a 12A engine... I thought that all the GSL-SEs had leather seats, and this one doesn't.

Leather seats and power steering were options on GSL-SEs

that price sounds high to me

Also, he said that he put almost $3000 into the car replacing stuff. Again, I don't know if that still changes much. I mean, if you put that much money into a car, you shouldn't really expect to sell it that much more than the blue book price.

However, I like the car so far a lot. I havn't seen it quite yet, but if it's as good as he says, I'd be willing to buy it for around $3200 (all the money I've saved up!!!)

Could you explain what you mean (I'm not as auto-literate as most of you)?

with that many miles, it isnt worth over 2000. If the engine has never been rebuilt i wouldnt ever give him 1000.

I'll echo the sentiment that $3400 is too high.

You need to see the car and give us pics to really say what it is worth. But being that it can pass CA emission would be a big benifit on the car. Could be worth that much but we cant tell from just the add.

Rear disk would mean it is a GSL or GSL-SE.

pay no mind to the rest of these fokes they like to talk about what they paid not what the car is worth.

ask about the carb or FI... That will be the big give away.

wait... you are in SF and a smog passing 7 is pretty hard to come by so it is all about the value to you.
without rebuild, that is way to expensive in my mind
ask about rust and check out storage bins behind the seat for rust.
ask when you go to see it for it to be cold so you can ssee how it really starts
more tips can be found with a forum search.

If I was in CA, I'd buy it at $3000.

yeah the car i spoke of that i bought for $1500 was in the same if not better condition than that explains. it also had all original paper including a window sticker owners manual everything. it was ca smogable everything IMO it is way too much to pay but if you really do want the car then go for it

Disc brakes could be a GSL. If you have a picture you could look at the wheels. If they are flat, 12-spoke, and 14 inches, it's a almost definitely a GSL-SE. If it has 4 spoke wheels, it's a GSL.

Just because the guy decided to put 3k into it doesn't mean it's worth that much. Anything over 1,500 is too much with mileage like that. Your biggest bargaining point is that there's a good chance it'll need a rebuild within 50k or so miles. Then there's the fact that anywhere you go, it's not worth even half of what he's asking for.

Go look at ebay. There are currently 69, RX-7's on ebay at the moment, and not a SINGLE 1st gen (except for a race car) is over 3,000. There is one that's at 3,000 but it's an automatic and is not gonna sell. The best one on there is at 2,750 and has only 37,000 miles, leather seats, glass moonroof, weber carburetor, racing beat exhaust, etc.

THat's great, but that car would EASILY sell for that much around here.
As a matter of fact, I'd buy it for $2000, if it had the motor rebuilt recently (with that many miles, if it passed smog, I'm guessing that it has!). Without the motor rebuilt, even I wouldn't pay more than $1500, the main point being that it is an 85, and those have that butt ugly interior, and that's just me.
