Little gilled can-sleeve on the tranny end of driveshaft - is it needed?

Putting a new driveshaft in (mazdatrix one), and it doesn't have the gilled sleeve.

I can't transfer the sleeve over, since it seems to be welded to the old shaft or something... If I install without it, is that fine? What's it for, anyway?

If you are referring to what I think you are then it is there to keep foreign material from getting into the seal area.

This.

Should I have swapped that over to the new driveshaft? I tried prying it off the old one, and I felt that if I tried any harder, I'd damage it.

Driveshaft will survive without it. I suspect that the way it's designed it also keeps the u-joint cool. I'm suprised that the new MT one doesn't have it.

Alright. Thanks.

Yeah, I kinda figured it has something to do with cooling, since it has the gills. I'll contact MT and see what they say.

I have an aftermarket driveshaft and it doesn't have that part either. Been a little over 10 years now without any problems. I'd say not to worry about it.

Good deal.

Also just got a reply from MT, and yeah, it's all proper and the part is not necessary.

+1 not needed

the rear main seal on the tranny has an inner and outer lip, so dirt wont reach the innards, contaminatining the tranny oil

He's not really trying to, Dave. His stock shaft has the piece and the aftermarket one does not. He thought that maybe he had to transfer the piece from the old shaft to the new one, but wasn't sure how.
