Lightening The FB: The True Story
Lightening The FB: The True Story
So I'm doing raceprep on another one of my cars, this time for SCCA's E-Production class. This weekend I stripped the car down pretty much to the bare tub (still has the gas tank and suspension on it until I get ready to put the cage in). I decided to save all the crap I took out of it to weigh since there's a few people that tell people you can't lighten the car much by taking the carpetting, padding, and tar out of it.
I rounded up the padding, put it in a box and weighed it. The box weighed 2.25 pounds on a small veggie scale, and the box with the crap in it weighed 23 pounds on what I consider an accurate bathroom scale (my two 15lb barbells registered at 30). So, in doing some simple math, this tells us just the nappy padding weighs ~20 pounds (YMMV).
BTW - this is alllll of the padding, including the impossible-to-remove-without-stripping-the-entire-interior-out piece on the firewall.
Remember, the carpet and tar is still in the car! From past experiences I know the tar is anywhere from 15-25 pounds (depending on year and who installed it). I'll be sure to post the results from that as soon as I get all that crap out.
I'll have some pictures later, it's hot and I'm lazy.

wrong, a friend and i have pulled the tar from one of my fb's and from his fc. i got around 40lbs from my WHOLE CAR. i chissled it aaaaalll. collected it all in a big *** bag and threw it on the scales. i may still have the pic. it's worth it if you are needing a diet for the car.

PS - I already know the tar weighs at least 20 pounds, but I've never completely de-tarred a car before. Therefore, I'm guessing it'll be more this time around!

Careful not to cut the body with that air hammer.
Carpet, tar, and various trim was about 65lbs. After daily driving that car for a couple years (and removing another 150lbs or so), I'm happy to say my newest one is keeping the weight penalty in the name of comfort. I'll spend money on power to compensate for the time I'd spend removing weight and adding the safety gear.

air chizzle, just freeze it with dryice and then smack it with a hammer and it comes up in big chunks! You only need about 25lbs. and you can get it at your local grocery store for about $5 per 3lbs

I know what you mean. My RX-3 is the same way. No carpet nor have any of that tar insulation. Much lighter than a SA and RX-2. It was my daily driver til the gas prices went up.

Keep me posted on what's going on... it's easier to build two cars at once than two cars seperately!
After much deliberation, I have finally decided that MMO smells like. . . . . . . . .
PEPTO BISMOL.
If you ALSO note, Pepto Bismol comes in a rotor shaped container. . .
since MMO is one of the 'miracle juices' for our car. . . I'm suspicious!

I dont know about pepto bismol man. I am thinking that you need to smell the 2 side by side to get a more accurate comparison. It is funny that it is in rotor shaped bottle though.
