Large Bar at Front of Car

There is a large bar that goes across the front of the car behind the bumper... it's about 1.5 inches in diameter and it has 3 uniform creases in it. I don't think it has been "hit" or "bent" but I don't think that it would be "creased".

Can someone look under thier car and check. It's not the steering linkage.. it's a bar that is welded to the frame just in front of the radiator...

If it's bent from an accident, I'll check the frame, and if the frame is straight... weld a bigger better bar under there.

It definately shouldn't be creased.

Well if it's supposed to be there, I've never seen one like it. I've seen maybe 10-12 different ones, exposed, on most of the different years, and I don't recall ever seeing a crease. Vertical or Horizontal? Has to have been hit at some point.

Here's the wierd thing...

It's bent forward, not towards the engine... if it were hit from the front, it had to have bent backwards right? Otherwise, it may have been hit from the side... thus causing it to "crumple".

I hope to god there isn't any frame damage...

Might have been used to improperly tow the vehicle out of a ditch or something to dimple it like that.

Normally only a blow or a tug to the side of a length of pipe will bend it like that - an impact on the side of the car should have transferred the energy to the base of the 'pole' (for lack of a better term)and bent the frame element it's welded to.

Of course, weird things happen in collissions... but improper towing would be my bet

EVERY 1st gen I ever seen has this its part of the frame support. And it SHOULDNT be bent in any place.. Thats symbolic of it being hit, or soemthing

Are we all talking about the same thig? The first "bar" that comes to my mind is the big steel "tube" across the front, but thats about 3" or so in diameter, wouldnt you say? He said this is only about 1 1/2" in diameter. Maybe Im thinking of the wrong thig, I just wanted to help claify things...When I get home (if its not too dark)Ill try and snap some pics and you tell me if you see it ok?

Yea, that's it... about 3" in diameter... it's obviously not functional... more for structure... it's welded and quite obvious when you have the hood off...
