Lag above 75mph weird?

Just to give you a run down of what im working with. I have a 1st gen 12a with a holly 650, racing beat intake manifold, racing beat exhaust, and a stock muffler.

The issue is strange though, no matter what gear im in if i go over 75mph the car will start to skip and stall out. I'm not sure if its some kinda of tuning problem with the carb or some issue with ignition maybe even fuel related. Anyone have any kind of thoughts on this??

Thanks

Is it when you throttle it that it stalls out, or is it whenever you get above 75 it dies off? By throttle it I mean, you're going steady at 76 and hit the gas, and it craps? Or you are gently accelerating through 75 and it craps?

Yea it starts to stall out either way hard acceleration or just cursing. I'm thinking it has to be something not tuned correctly on the holley because it’s doing it now during long or sharp right and left turns.

that would be the fuel flowing from one bowl to the other. You need the RB race bowls. Good luck on that $220 upgrade.

have you checked the fuel psi and checked the flow.
your cornering issue can be solved with what lovintha7 referred to. although they starve due to the float closeing from the g-force put on them while cornering. hence the change in position from side hung floats to center.
you need to go to jegs.com you can buy the bowls there.
the quick change jet bowls work fine and only run about 36 each.
You'll still have buy the floats and everything else to attach the fuel but it's lot cheaper than RB's prices.

I can't believe nobody has suggested the fuel filter yet.

If its clogged, it will reduce flow, and will hamper the upper end power. Its a few dollars to replace, and is good maintenance even if it isn't the cause of your problem.

I agree, I don't have an aftermarket carb but I've had issues iwth the fuel filter. My car wouldn't accelerate past 80mph because it will begin to sputter and lose power.

WELL....... IF I go above 57-58 mine does the same thing, I have new everything (almost) filters, engine, carb, fuel lines, what I did today is went and bought a Holley fuel pump (only $100.00 at Advance Auto Parts) my other pump was OEM and I could hear it pumping but the pressure (which didnt exist) had a hard time keeping up with my float bowls. I could watch everything through my glass secondary filter, it kept getting sucked dry. (yes I drove with the hood off) I am almost finished installing, I stopped to powder coat the plate the pump sits on. Tomorrow I might go get a regulator, we'll see and I'll post my results once I have driven for a day or 2.

Yea I'm going to be changing the fuel filter 1st then just work from there. Might as well get the cheap crap outta the way. I think its going to be a clogged up fuel filter though it makes the most since and i've never changed it since i've owned the car which is over 4 years. I really appreciate all the advice guys.

Hey army soldier what carb are you running on your 7.

If its never been changed in 4 years, its a good probability that its your problem. Its reccomended that you change it once every year.

WELL.... I installed my *new* Holley fuel pump..... The lag... is gone! (I couldnt get above 52 without it dying off quick) No more, just alot of quick accel. etc.... but I need to dial it down, so tonight I am going to get a regulator. Really dont need one, just being safe. The OEM carb is rated at; 4.7 psi and 1.1(?) gpM . The new carb is 7 psi and 96 gpH. So, either get a new pump and filters, I wouldnt go buying big dollar items. Always start with the most basic things first, like filters then maybe a pump, because a carb will *normally* run just as good at 130 mph as it will at 30. Because of the way the carbs work, if it going to run bad, it will do it all the time not when you reach 75 or whatever. Hope you solve your issue soon.

Hey army soldier what carb are you running on your 7.
My car has the OEM carb (nikki 415 cfm , 4 bbl) My engine is street ported, just bought it 2 months ago new. I removed most of the emissions stuff and made a block off plate from diamond plate aluminum, which I have tons more of if anyone is interested in having one made. I'll post a pic of that later. The fuel lines and stuff I have been replacing with Goodyear 100 psi hoses (red) I already replaced the coils and dizzy with racing coils and OEM dizzy. Next month I am going to sandblast the entire undercarriage and coat with POR15. (ok, I am getting carried away, you asked about the carb, my apologies) I was trying to keep everything OEM, but found I like the upgrades more, I want to get a new carb, but not yet, I will after I make a custom hood scoop and get it in place. (the new carb and intake are a little bit higher and the hood wouldnt close) well thats about it, the new filters and pump are doing great. (get an in-line filter and install it right before the carb... amazing what it catches)

Success!! Simple 4 dollar part and now I'm kicking *** around the turns again. After 5 mins and 1/4 of a tank of gas that leaked on my armpit and my right eye I replaced the fuel filter and all my problems went away. Now i just need to find a way for my right eye to stop crying.

DAMN IT! I knew it was the fuel filter just from reading the post preview, but someone already beat me to suggesting it. Crap. I feel worthless again now.

Haha... ya I guess I should have mentioned that you will get gas in your eyes... I know I did on my first one. Or... we could just keep that a secret initiation for all the new guys.

Safety glasses my friends. Safety glasses. I learned that one while I was at work one day and watched a guy in the next bay pull a fuel filter out of a GMC that still had the lines pressurised at 50+ PSI. Cloud of fuel spray everywhere. I was wearing glasses, he wasnt. I had to literally drag him out of the pit under the truck and get him to the eye flush station. Our 7s arent that bad usually, but they splatter when the lines pop off. I know its tempting not to, but wear a set of glasses. I even wear them when Im just working under my car or truck without fear of fluids or spray. Chunks of dirt and crap falling in my eyes is crappy. I used to not wear them all the time, but one day I decided I needed some. I shopped for a nice pair that stay on really well, and dont distort my vision at all. Keep them clean and scratch free, and you wont mind wearing them either. I have a neck strap on them too so I can pull them off if Im not a risk and they hang around my neck so the next time I need them and Im half under the car, I dont say "oh I forgot them" and then be too lazy to go get them. I usually throw them around my back so they dont hang in front when Im leaning under the hood and annoy me. It works, trust me, youll wear them more and more once you realize how nice they are.

removing the gas cap prior to working on fuel lines will relieve the fuel pressure
