About a month ago I bought a 85 GSL and today when I tried to check the key on the storage boxes and the glove box the key I ahev did not work.

Did these cars come with a valet ket?

No valet key was designed or provided with the 1st Gen RX-7's. Most likely what you have is that someone has replaced the ignition key due to a stolen car situation where the scum-of-the-earth car thieves damaged the ignition switch. This is usually the case when you have a key for the doors, and a separate key for the ignition.

What you describe sounds like the doors and ignition are keyed alike, which means someone went through some effort to replace the door lock cylinders and rear hatch, but not the storage bins or glove box lid - strange.

The dealer gave you 2 keys with the RX-7 but they were both identical and functioned in all available locks for your car. No valet, no separate ignition/door, etc. Cut and dried.

Guess I am going to have to try and figure out how to get the storage bins and glove box keyed like the door, hatch and ignition.

if you go to your local mazda dealer and give them your vin number, they can cut you a new key. Should match since the glove box is orgional.

Are you sure about the valet key thing? My 2 rx7s have only one key, and it works in the ignition, doors, hatch, but not the glove box or the storage bins. This is more than coincidence here... I could have sworn someone on this forum said that there was a valet key. Guess I'll stop by at the Mazda dealer and get some info.

I think is weird that the key I have only works on the doors, ignition & hatch but not on the storage bins & the glove box. I am going to the dealer today to get a key made. Sure is weird since was told the car was never stolen or been in an accident so why would there be another set of keys.

My key only works on the doors & ignition, also. And it's the original key with "Mazda" written down it. I was told that it's the valet key.

Got the new key cut from Mazda by using the VIN and the key doesnt work on anything and actually appears different than the one I already have. I am not sure if it was cut correctly or not so may go to another dealer and try again.
