keeps dieing

i bought an 85 gsl-se from this guy down the streed and its rough it had a broken window and broken door hand and need a completely new exhaust, he said it has a motor in it about 60,000 miles on it. anyway i bought it in january and its just now getting warm enough to work on it. by the way it ran fine when i bought it. when i started it up it wouldnt idle, so i would give it alittle gas so it would have a chance to warm up i would let off the gas slow and it will idle at about 700 rpms but if i would rev it up and let off the gas it would die. I put gad in it for the first time and i relized the door over the gas cap was bent open alittle and there was no gas cap i think water got in the tank do you think that is why it wont idle right?

in a fuel injected system, you need a gas cap to hold fuel pressure. you should change the fuel filter and inspect the engine for vaccume leaks. my SE's are very sensitive to tps problems and BACV problems. that should be a fair start.
