just thought i should make a formal introduction

i made a post the other night about a CA smog legal header, and i have not yet decided what to do about it, but i wanted to tell a little about myself and detail my project so far.

about 6 months ago i bout a 1983 mazda rx7 GS from my roommate for $300. He had obtained the car for free through a mutual friend who just wanted to get rid of it. The mutual friend was the original owner and was going to a VA home.

my roomie drove it for a few months and then the hydraulic clutch went out. so after a grueling 3 days of getting the wrong master cylinders from autozone and kragen, we went to global and found one that actually fit. no big surprise to me now, but the good one was a tokico.

anyways, my roomie took it to get it smogged and it failed as a gross poluter. after seeing the results he decided he didnt want to put money in to it and sold it to me for the price of the clutch parts.

when i got hold of the car, it idled high (1-1.5k) and if you changed the idle speed any it would die. it also ran very rich, and had a sort of an exhaust stutter when it decellerated. it also had a ball berring in the hose running from the engine tot he back of my air cleaner, and the idle compensator was bypassed with what looks like it may be a piston pin (lol). The brakes were shot, and the drivers side door would close but the door buzzer would keep going off.

The first thing i did was hook up the idle compensator hose and took the ball berring out of the air cleaner line. no surprise it ran like ****. idle got rough, engine started hunting and just generally sounded bad. so i plugged the idle comp line again and it ran the same way it did when i got it. no noticeable change with the ball berring out though, so i left it out for about a week and a half. mind you this is not my daily driver. all i really do with the rx right now is start it and ever few days take it around the block at like 3 AM.

checked my oil which was full before i pulled the berrign out, and i had used almost all of the oil. ****. so i put the berring back in there, walked to my dads house, and used his car to get oil. filled the oil up and drove it to my dad's house where i parked it for a few weeks.

Had my dad rebuild my carb...i dont know anything about them yet. my education is starting int he summer. my dad and i are rebuilding his truck. anyways, while my dad rebuilt the carb i went over everything and made sure things were hooked up properly and changed my oil. it smelled heavily of gas so i knew there was something wrong somewhere. hoped that the carb rebuild would help.

got the carb rebuilt and hooked everything up. went to start it and it started up and died immediately. so i tried it again and the engine started spinning really fast. My dad and i checked the float level on the carb and couldnt see it so we weighed the floats, found out they were taking on gas and replaced them. car started but stammerred at about 25-30 mph and lost power.

replaced the fuel filter and it ran great. it still runs rich so i think that maybe my cat is dead. also found a hole in my muffler so i wanted to upgrade...hence my other thread. anyways, i guess that is where i am at. still need to do brakes and exhaust stuff so i can pass smog but other than that it is in decent condition. few minor dings in the body but the chassis is straight. still has factor deck and eq. also has some wierd *** phone thingy. i think its hands free but the phone is missing from it.

as they say though NICE TO MEET YOU!!! i hope to be a good addition to the rx-7 owners club
