Just put a Bonez exhaust on my 7, here are the results

My dad and I put on my new exhaust today, which goes from the manifold and includes a hi-flow cat, and then I have the stock exhaust from teh cat back. irst of all, as to be expected, taking the original exhaust off was a royal pain, rusty easy to break bolts, etc. The new exhaust went in very smoothly. Unfortunately, when I started the car afterward, there was no difference in sound. This is the main reason i purchased the exhaust and maybe I'm an idiot but i thought the improved flow and loss of 2 cats would also improve sound without messing with the stock muffler. Hopefully tommorow when I drive it i'll notice a power gain but who knows? Thought you guys might be interested and was wondering if any of you did the same thing. Thanks

I drove it today on the way to work, and there is a slightly noticeable difference in sound. It sounds a little more throaty, and is louder but barely. I haven't noticed too much power increase but when i got on the gas on the entrance ramp to the highway, the car did seem to rev through the gears more quickly. After today, I'm pretty happy with the results.

Well for comparison's sake, here's a short vid clip of what a 12A sp engine with an RB header to straight pipe to RB muffler sounds like in the first couple of gears shifting at 8k rpm from inside the car with the windows opened.

http://oregonstate.edu/~abelk/sound%20clips/exhaust.avi

Of course truth be told a percentage of that engine noise is the intake side of it.

Thats a damn shame

You shoulda bought the bonez downpipe instead. its louder, lighter, flows more, costs less. a downpipe and underdrive pullelys cost the same as you hi flo cat. Plus with the down pipe you can start eliminating unessecary **** like the airpump and bracket, replace the acv with a blockoff plate, ditch the vacuum solenoids & hoses. Awwww yeah!

I may need to get the bonez hi-flo cat too, I just bought mine and it has the racing beat exhaust, so I don't think I can pass the smog inspection here...

Rotary Performance of Garland (RX7.com) also sells a Bonez high flow cat "blank" that you could put into your existing system. Likely need to hook up the air pump, though.
Not sure if you need to pass a visual test, or sniffer test. If it's just a sniffer test, the cat added to your current system should pass, as long as the car is tuned good.

I'm pretty sure it's just a sniffer...thanks for the info, I've been looking for an alternative...

You should have gotten a full Racing Beat exhaust . Here are some vids of my car...BTW the car was not running the way is should in these vids, WAY to rich, wrong carb on the car (previous owner) and a lot of other little things.

The videos don't give the car justice of how good it sounds at WOT.

Also the vid quality is horrible! Enjoy!

Yeah that's my car. Well, it was. I parted it out and sold it.

It had a Sterling carb and RB air filter box. And it looks and sounds like this:

http://oregonstate.edu/~abelk/sound%20clips/intake.avi

Full setup in my sig.

as far as the thread starter. u must have been **** faced when u put the new exhaust on becuase thats the only reason i wouldnt drive it IMMIDEATLEY after installing a new "go fast" part. even then back in the day i was out at my friends dads shop in the middle of no where when i was working on my car and i would go test it out late at night.
kinda nice when there are only 200 residents in the town your in and the nearest house is a half a mile away. hahah i miss those days.

yeah, long story, but i'll shorten it for you.

i was on a tight budget. had i gone the fuel injection with the turbo i would have needed the stand alone management system (microtech here is over $1,000) and then the fueling system would have been more expensive as well (surge tank, high pressure pump, boost referenced regulator). not forgetting front mount intercooler and piping. so basically instead of using the budget on whole lot of second hand stuff for turbo route i basically kept it 'old school' and spent the money on a complete rebuild for the motor, a brand new ida and brand new header/exhaust. I must say i'm extremely happy with the outcome and i plan on getting loads of enjoyment out of it as it is.

having said that though....i am 'rebuilding' a budget and next project will either be

1) blow thru turbo ie prepping the ida
2) ida throttle bodies with turbo

at this point i'm leaning towards (2) the motor won't need to be touched...as u say, it is the lower comp 9 rotors. and i have the turbo and manifold, water and oil lines from the s5 tii.

but i'm guessing this upgrade is like a year away. as the $ comes in, so i will buy the goodies.

So far I'm happy with my new exhaust and no more go fast parts will be installed for atleast a few months, though I may look at removing the snorkle on the air intake for better flow. I'm in Wheeling West Virginia by the way and my car is silver. I appreciate the videos but my speakers don't work so they don't do me any good. By the way, is there an afermarket turbo made for the 12a?
