Just purchased '85 = Wife's surprise b-day present

She bought an '84 new when she graduated from HS has has repeatedly brought it up since. Found a super clean one that needs a paintjob and tranny syncro's. I have a few questions though.

How do you get the windshield trim off? I have all the other trim, mirrors, handles, and locks removed, but can't figure out how the windsheild trim comes off, and I sure don't want to jack it up trying.

Also need some pictures, if possible, of the air ducts behind the front valence. These have been crushed and I have them pretty much straight, but there's a little "wing" sticking out on the very outer edge where it meets the fender. The left side fits right with the wing sticking straight out, but the right will not even come close. So which is correct?

I'm sure I'll have more as I get into this, but I like what I see so far.

Any help / advice is appreciated.

as far as the widshield trim goes unless you get the fenders off then you will have to brake the clips holding them on blackdragonauto.com has some replacements.

you just pull it off. i took off my upper and side windsheild trims when i replaced the 3 seals. you gotta at least order fresh clips if youre gonna do that, you'll prob break some. just be careful not to bend the chrome when pulling it off.

Thanks for the quick response!

Seems a bit midevil to just yank the trim off....that's what I was trying to avoid! I don't mind buying new clips and the PO gave me a Black Dragon catalog, so I have that going for me.

i was worried too. came off like butter.

the edges of the trim snap over little plastic clips. the clips would break before the trim would

Great info guys! Not exactly what I was expecting, but I guess I didn't kow what to expect! I assume the "just pop it off" theory applies to the trim at the base of the windshield as well?

i think i took off the lower one too. there are two different size plastic clips. the bigger ones are for the two side pieces. i think i bought the clips at mazdatrix.

Breaking the clips is the only way the trim will come off. I've even broken new clips when reinstalling the trim. I use a 1" wide putty knife to remove the trim. Carefully inspect the trim after removal, to make sure the rolled edge on the backside of the trim isn't bent in/out.

The gutter trim over the doors is rolled towards the roof, sometimes only using thumbs on the bottom of the trim, fingers on the top.

The clips are impossible to remove without breaking them, especially if they are original, so don't waste your time being gentle.

Do not pry against the glass. It is very easy to crack it when you are working so near the edge. I use a paint can opener. Lay it flat on the windshield with the bent end facing up. Hook it under the inside edge of the trim near each clip and pull towards the center of the windshield then outward. You will feel the trim snap off or break the clip. All 4 sides can be removed like this. Top is three pieces. Don't lose the small center piece.
