JDM Turbo

I was wondering if anyone has used or played around with this turbo on a street ported 12a. I'm able to get it for 150 brand new so its a good deal but want to know if anyone has had good results from this turbo. Thanks for any advice.

Is that an ebay turbo or something? I think to get much help, you'll need to mention the brand and the specs of the turbo. A good choice for many is just the stock S4/S5 turbo from the TII cars. These turbos are designed for a rotary, work well up to moderate power levels, and are easy to come by.

Im not sure where he got it. Its on craigslist listed as a JDM T3/T4 turbo that can produce up to 25psi. I had the chance to buy a t3 turbo for $75 but for some reason buying a $75 turbo makes me worry. He has no idea on the quality of the stock T3 or where its been. WOuld I be better off buying the Stock T3 and rebuilding it over this JDM type turbo?

Personally, I would probably stay away from it. I mean, you don't even know what you are getting or the condition. The whole "JDM" is just put on there to get attention from the Honda boys and such. The thing probably was never on a Japanese car or even made in Japan.

Being able to boost to xx psi means nothing. There are maps for every turbo made that relates the efficiency of the turbo under different conditions. Also the size of the turbo is important. A larger turbo will flow more and create more power with less boost. Of course the trade off is that larger turbos tend to take longer to spool.

I would keep shopping and get something that you at least have an idea of what it really is and how it will perform on a rotary. I suggest getting a good condition TII turbo (used) or get one in not so great condition and rebuild it. This way you will know what you have. In addition, you will have something that is backed up by a large knowledge base on here. This could be helpful for tuning or if you have some boost issues. It will be easier to get help if you say you are using an S4/S5 turbo as opposed to saying "I'm using some turbo from CL, and I don't know what it is".

I would look at the 2nd gen section and just see what kind of power people are getting with stock turbos. That will at least give a ballpark as to where you will max out before having to upgrade.

Most T3/T4 turbos are too small for a rotary. If you don't feel like learning the ins and outs of turbos, how to read compressor maps, what all the numbers mean and how they interact with each other, etc., just buy a stock TII turbo and call it a day.

JDM is a Honda boy marketing term. One thing I learned in life is you get what you pay for--and sometimes much less. I blew out a Miata engine once with a cheap CDM (Chinese Domestic Market) turbo.

Turbo rotaries are easy to destroy and you need to understand what you are bolting on to it, waste gate requirements, and fuel needs. If not, you will have a nice life-sized RX-7 shaped paperweight in your driveway.

More detail on your build would be helpful and how you plan on controling cooling, boost, and (especially) fuel.

That being said, I always buy my turbos from BNR Supercars. He is not the cheapest, but he is probably one of the most knowledgeable people out there on Rotary turbos, you know exactly what you are getting, and you know your compressor blades are not going to come flying off and FOD your engine.

The turbo conversion cost is much more than simply the cost of the turbo though. The link is to my turbo conversion. Your costs may be higher or lower depending on exactly what you plan to do. Budget about $5k for it.
