Talking I've made a decision, I'm going turbo...

Well today I decided that I am going to have to go turbo. I want to compile an exact list of everything I'm going to need to get it done. As some of you know I am leaving for basic in 9 days. But when I get back I'm going to have all that money svaved up and I've decided wha I'm going to do with it. I want to blow through my weber that I allready have, with a 6 port 13b. the one i have in the car now runs great and they're plentiful if I blow it up. I want to either drive down to rotaryshack And get it done when i get back or order it all when I'm gone and It would be stitting there at home waiting for me to put togther Anyone withEXPERIANCE feel free to chime in and let me know what all I'll need to get this done.
What I Have:
1983 GSL
S4 13b
Weber 45 dcoe
Idle jets 65f9
Main jets 180f11
Accell pump 45
36mm choke?
RB header & presilencer
Second silencer in the mid pipe
Dynomax muffler(it hasn't burnt out, i got the goodone)
MSD DFS
MSD 8mm plug wires
Eletric fan

Ok, well Im sure that a search would tell you what youre going to need, but I guess I could type it out as well. I dont know if you want an exact setup to copy or just the basic components or what, but heres a list of some of the basic components you will need.

Fuel system will need to be upgraded. High flow pump comes into play here. You need something that will supply your base carb pressure, plus 1 PSI for every PSI of boost you plan to use. For example, you run 3.5 PSI of fuel pressure now, and you want to run 10 PSI of boost, you will need a pump that can supply a minimum of 13.5 PSI. Youll also need a rising rate fuel pressure regulator. This is so the fuel pressure will increase with boost and the fuel wont just get pushed back through the lines. Youll need to re-jet the carb to run richer so you dont lean out on boost, and you will need to talk to Robert about having it all sealed up so it doesnt just spray gas out of every hole when its pressurised.

You will need a turbo and manifold obviously. Intercooler is optional, as is a BOV, but I pretty much consider then neccessary to build a turbo setup properly.

Youre also going to need an oil feed and drain for the turbo, and possibly a coolant feed and return as well, depending on the turbo you get.

Exhaust you can use a downpipe that fits whatever turbo you get, then just have some more pipe made up to make it work with whatever is under the car.

You will need a new air filter and intake for the turbo, and you will need a carb bonnet to connect to the intercooler pipe.

Igniton will also need to be addressed. Welding the dizzy fully advanced and setting the timing to the proper location seems to be the most popular for the DIY turbo people.

Youll also need some other misc crap, but Im sure you get the idea. Its all really a matter of what you want to do, and you didnt really tell us that other than you just want a turbo. Thats like saying you want a car, but not what kind .

I'm in the Army so basic is 9 weeks.. 13weeks is marines, 6 weeks is airforce, and i think navy does 9 weeks... But i'll be training for 10 months total including job training and airborne school
Also right now i have a holley blue pump and regulator. And i have no OMP i pre mix now if that becomes an issue when going turbo.
As far as a turbo I don't realy know what kind i want my goals are at least 325 bhp when i turn up the boost, but in the 200's range when I'm drivin it around.

Wish list:
turbo manifold
Turbo
downpipe
intercooler
rising pressure regulator
wastegate
blowoff valve
of course the pipeing
carb bonnet
carb jets and prolly a bigger venturi
cab all sealed up
oil drain and feed lines
mounting hardwre for the intercooler
longer oilcooler lines(cause the cooler sits where the intercooler would go right now)
intake 2 turbo and air filter

and now to get specific, if this list looks complete to everyone. now i'm going to be making my decision on exactly what parts i will be getting. Oh and on a 1b 6 port will the stock turbo manifold from a turbo 2 fit under the intake manifold or will i need a custom manifold. An i have no actuators it runs wide open all the time...

okay I'm pretty sure i'm going to be getting the HKS manifold from Rotaryshack. Now it has a t flange for a external wastegate. So I'm going to be getting a external wastegate from them and a bost controler. I'm going to get the manual boost controler fron HKS the VBC. Now does that work with any wastegate or would I have to get one that allows adjustment?? I was looking at just the standard wast gate from HKS and they list them by PSI. Is that max PSI, or the only PSI they release pressure at?

Have fun humping up the hills in Pendleton. I'm guessing you're going to Sandiego because your profile says you're from Ann Arbor.

about the wastegate, they're measured in max psi usually. so it is good up TO "whatever psi it's rated"

If your going external wastegate the bigger the better. You don't want to cheap out for your engine and turbos' sake, boost creep is a biatch I would recommend a 48 or 50mm at least.

You will want a front mounted oil cooler if you don't have one. 2nd gen coils are nice. Turbo timers are a waist of money, and for the lazy. A FMIC would help. No OMP, good choice.

Good luck

1b = 13B, right? I had the stock GSL-SE lower intake manifold also wide open with a stock Turbo II exhaust manifold and turbine on my old SE, so yes, they'll fit together. Good luck in boot camp... don't drop the soap!
