Its Finally Here!!!
Its Finally Here!!!
Hey guys! I finally got my 1983 GLS-LE. Unfortunately it it has a blown fuel pump and the carb needs to be rebuilt, but she's finally here.

This is my issue though. The car came with a race manifold for the intake. I need to know what you guys know about it if you do. It has a large opening on the back of it that is in the same location as the stock emissions crap, but is a different shape, size, and bolt pattern. It also does not include an option for the small butterfly that comes on the stock manifold.

VS

Here is a pic of the backs of the manifolds

Aftermarket

Also, Can I remove the air pump without repercussion?

Thanks for any info guys!!!

if you remove the airpump if your cats arent gone then you would want to do so, bc over time it will cause them to plug up. sorry i dont dont much about the carb stuff im runnin FI
Can you expand on what you mean by old school? I'm a big fan of old school, I just need to know what you mean in this context.
If I leave the carb stock will it be able to handle the manifold, or will it have negative effects due to the larger runners and smoother ports? Or, if I do the modifications to the stock carb that are listed in the FAQs page, would it be able to take advantage of the larger runners? I plan on doing the mechanical secondaries mod to it already.
In regards to the air pump, if I don't have it connected to the emissions, will it be ok to leave it on the motor that way? If its not connected, will that be why the catalytic converters will plug?
Also, thanks for the offer, but i just dropped $60 on a new one from rockauto.com. I'm really in the market for a cheap rebuild kit for the carb. The cheapest one I've found is $45 for the whole thing.

That manifold looks like it would restrict air flow by causing a lot of turbulence in the space between the flat bottom of the Nikki and the really curvy spot of the runners.

if you dont have the air pump connected, why leave it there? the cats DO need the air pump connected to work, so if you're going to run a cat, leave the air pump hooked up
I got the kit from my local store here a couple of days ago. Its a Hygrade kit so it has all the good stuff in it. The carb is now rebuilt and waiting to go on the car. As for the intake, I decided to use the srock intake mani but I ported it out a little bit for better airflow. I made sure to keep it a lil rough so that I don't have to worry about fuel falling out of suspension. I am a little worried about how the carb will work b/c I haven't rebuilt but one other carb, and that one was a Holley with a lot of aftermarket support with a lot of really good manuals and pictures. That one worked fine, but I'm a little shaky with this one. I followed all of the rebuild pics and the stuff that came with the rebuild kit, but I'm still iffly. Fingers crossed!
I have no doubt of my mechanical aptitude, it just happens that there is no one in the area who deals with these cars so my local tech support is lacking quite a bit.
