Intro/Oil Leaks

Hi all,

I'm new here, I just bought an 85 GSL-SE for reasons unknown to even me! Actually, it was really cheap, and I've always liked the RX-7. I've been a hard-core devotee to the DSM turbo crack pipe (my other car is a 92 Mitsubishi Galant VR-4) but this rotary stuff is pretty good too. My dream car is actually an FD, so I figure this car is a good start.

Anyway, I have an oil leak from the fitting that goes into the oil cooler. Is this a common problem, or what? Could the oil cooler be messed up? Or is it more likely the banjo bolts/copper washers? Please help, I can't stand oil leaks!

Thanks,

Ken

This is common for the SE type oil cooler. The fitting on the cooler where the hose attaches usually cracks. Unfortunately most shops don't like to weld such things so you'll probably end up buying an aftermarket one, but @ least it will be sludge-free

I had to do the exact same thing after buying my SE, BTW.

Can I interest you in some cupholders and an aftermarket stereo bracket? *ducks and runs before other members can stop him*

Aftermarket cooler? Is it application specific, or like a B&M and you have to adapt to make work?

Cupholders? Where do they go?

I've had the same problem, but on my 12a, cost me 40 bucks to fix it! It turned out just to be a crappy hose or something.

VERY common on the SE...as my welder said, "IT'S A SHITTY ****** DESIGN. MAZDA REALLY FUCKED THAT ONE UP!" (welders talk really loud). Anyway, he fixed it for me, welded the hell out of the bosses on the cooler. About $70. Just find a guy that will do aluminum.

Right on.

Look up welding in the yellow pages of your phone book. Call them. When they say hello say, "I need to know if you weld aluminum?" Then chances are they will answer you.
