Interesting Idea I had the other day...
Ok, remember the Eclipse from F&F? Well, it had a scoop on the roof of it, and for the life of me, I couldnt figue out what it was doing, other than trying to rip itself off and slow the car down at high speeds with the air having no place to go and all...Anyway, I was driving in my 7 with the sun roof open on an extraordinarily hot day, and was thinking "I sure wish I could get more air in here from the sunroof" And then it hit me. I could take an old sunroof from a junk yard cut it up, and mold one of those fiberglass scoops on it, and then paint it the same color as the car. This way, it would be a fully funtional body piece, and you could take it off to put a different sun roof on anytime you wanted
. What do you think?

it was stolen off of rally car's design. since you can't roll the windows down they use a roof mount scoop like that to feed air to the driver and navigator. go to www.i-club.com and the wrx guys can probably point you to a place that sells them.
Ok guys, I found this "bad boy" after about 2 mins of looking. Its about the right shape Id like to see on my car, and its about the right price ($150), and its actually the right size (roughly). Its 26.5" long, and the stock sunroof is 22.5", and its also 26" wide, the stock sunroof is 32.5". So, a little front to back trimming and it should work

Or theres this one which is "specifically for vehicles with sun roofs". This may not be bad either, but I think I like the bigger one, it just may not be possible to trim it enough to fit, and still retain the look of it. Plus this one is cheaper ($95).

Oh, and they both came from http://www.wholehyper.com/spoilers-wings.html

craziness. I started thinking "one could use that as an air/water cooler similar to the one hanging out the windows of rally cars to cool the interiors".
Then I remembered my car has an HVAC unit.
Still, it would be a fun project for ***** and giggles. A bit ricey, but fun.

It sounds like a Good Idea in theory. Are you guys referring it for regular driving or rally racing - where you would need to keep the windows closed?
I'm just wondering how it would do. for instance, When I drive with the Sunroof totally off, at like 70 mph, and then just manually pull down the visor/spoiler - It's like a freaking parachute. The Air pressure that immediately enters the car actually hurts my ears.
I love hood scoops, vents and other goodies, I just think they need to be functional. Providing cool air for a driver and navigator certainly counts
If it's not functional, then its just rice.

Im a thought starter
. So, does anyone wanna try my idea? Or is up to me to do it and report to you? Im out of work again, so it will be a while before I can finace it, but I sure will try, I think it would be cool as hell

PS - I think the scoop would be cool with the windows up or down. Me personally, I dont do enough drving above 40 that I get what I would call enough wind into my car to cool me. 90% of my driving is done in downtown with a 25 MPH speed limit, so I need all the help I can get. Plus my AC is long gone

those things look like crap, if you are going to do this it has to be molded in really smooth like the FF eclipse or a Mclaren. Those look good,
even better, they look functonal.

well... awhile back... i remember there being a thread on how the hatch lifts at high speed... or somtin... so... i thought peejay said somtin about makin some kinda thing to hold it up.. or somtin... dunno... you can search for the thread

..... too tired right now.... i just figured the hatch being open... all pressure released.... higher speed/less drag... sorry.. too tired i will shut up now
well... laterz, Andrew
So you guys are talking as in this is a temp mod, like you would have to put the modded roof on whenever you wanted it...
So... What if I went out with it on a seemingly nice day and then it decided to downpour and there was a massive storm and stuff... Would I get wet? Is there a way to prevent that?

. No, I dunno yet. Maybe we could make a "plug" for the end of it or something...Or maybe a slide thing over it on the inside so that you could close it if you odnt want the air for some reason, but then it would just fill up with water
. I dont know...~T.J.

Question is, do you guys just wanna play with hood scoops, or do you wanna fix what you concider to be a problem?
Andrew inadvertantly hit the nail on the head when he mentioned the hatch lifting at speed.
Directfreak said his ears actually hurt, and I think that it's because of a build up in pressure.
There's simply no place for the air to go. Gotta have a place for it to go if you expect it to circulate.
So MY proposition is that someone (not me, of course
) utilize headlight popper-uppers in the rear of the car. With the flick of a switch, they open, and air can then continue on a route from the sunroof/windows/or air scoop - out through the rear of the car.
Yeah?

The Aussie style "Mad Max" ducktail spoiler on the back edge of the roof of his car is what is actually needed...it "pops" the airflow loose from following the contour of the hatch...
there is not enough lift in the hatch at 85 or below to make the car unstable. how do i know this? simple. i left the hatch unlocked and and still stuck to the seals. now i, at a massive 125 lbs, can lift the hatch. so if there is that much pressure then it should pull the hatch open an vent. it never did. it was like it normally was cruising around on the highway. you guys can run out and test this if you want, but you'll see its a pain not a major problem.
rotormotordriver- i would just put a foam seal around the inside edge of the mouth of the scoop and put in a hinged door that could be latched shut or stuck open as needed.

What about getting a second standard twist-up and putting it on the front? That way you could put the front up as much a you want, and still crack the back a bit to let air flow. It's wierd I was thinking about this earlier today, and this thread just proves that I'm not the only one sweltering in my 7.
