intake roar
I'm envious, I want a valve train so I can have an intake roar, definately the best sound... That's it, I'm gonna buy some 4 banger and leave the stock exhaust on and give it an intake, mmm sounds good.
Someone tell me I can make my wankel do this... only, I'd never hear it because the exhaust is too damn loud...

You're joking right? My intake is probably louder than the exhaust lol.
Even with the stock carb and RP air cleaner, induction noise was very noticeable, and sounded awesome.

dude, fix your exhaust ... then get better filter system for the Nikki, or ...
get a whole aftermarket intake system! i've heard some rotaries with Holleys and Webers that sound just as raw as the piston cars with intakes.

Intake roar sounds sweet. my 12a with a K&N has a nice subtle intake roar. I agree with winnipeg, with no filter it sounds like a duck dying or somthing, its kinda funny for a bout 5 seconds then it gets really gay.

i've got a 6 port 13b w/ a 650 double pumper holley, and a wide open exhaust- it makes a definite intake roar, but only if you right next to the intake... anywhere else, all you hear is the 2.5" exhaust thru 3 see-thru mufflers......

I accadently left my air cleaner cap off the other day, and couldent figure out why all of a sudden it sounded like a completly bad *** porsche. well turns out The stock Nikki makes killer intake roar when its uncapped.
My moms old miata had the best intake sound I know of.
RB exhaust and header.
Mazdaspeed cams and 4 throttle conversion.
JE pistons
4 seperate holley blue filters.
hard dawg roll bar.
Link engine management.
When we got it it had the Link, full exhaust, pistons and hard dawg roll bar.
I added the cams and the throttles
I got em cheap, $650 for both. Some guy at my dealership whas builing a autoX car but he totalled it before he got his mazdaspeed stuff.
ill see if I can find a pic

I have a friend with a miata running a K&N FIPK and it sounds awesome, much better than the exhaust note, which is also quite good.
When I had a 13B street ported and a Weber 48IDA downdraft, That sucker would make such a gnarly intake sound. From the inside of the car driving at WOT it was much louder than the exhaust! I hacked the bottom of a stock 12A aircleaner to fit it right over that stack to keep the noise down
On SE's simply remove that rubber air inlet connector from the airbox to get a little roar.. I find that its much more responsive to throttle input as well.

Id be happy with a custom massacared (sp) air filter housing and a K&N
. I like the sound with the lid off, or even the filter gone. I'll admit, Ive tried it
. Just not with my baby, lol. It was the 85 GSL, lol

It's true- The Nikki will surprise you with it's roar if you put one of those cheap 6 inch chrome 'muscle-car' type open filter housings on. I use a Wix filter, though. (No "roar" is worth using a crappy air filter for!
) But the difference was very noticeable. But I've removed the choke assembly along with anything else I don't need on that carb. It's a big gapping hole down to the venturis. It makes a big difference.
It has a nice "Porsche-on-steroids" kind of sound, but when you close the hood, it's gone. I think if I still had the stock exhaust, the roar would'nt be so drowned out. (RB header)
Side note- I just saw a show where a man had a doner larynx transplant- the first successful one ever. They had video of the doner before he died, and his voice was very deep. The recipient had been mute for nearly twenty years. Six months after the surgery, he had learned to talk again, and his voice sounded nothing like the doners video tape.
The doctor concluded that the sound of ones voice is dictated mostly by the shpes of the mouth and throat.
Applying that logic to exploiting a nice deep intake roar? I dunno. Just a thought. Using that logic, it would seem to me to be all in the carb shape, right?

My '79 SA has an almost turbo whistle to it when it's at WOT, which sounds entirely different from my old '82 which just roared loudly. On top of that, the fan clutch was stuck, so it made fan noises all the time as well.
Actually I was quite surprised at the difference between the sounds of my '79 and my old '82. Granted the '82 didn't have a cat, but neither does the '79 (by design). Anyone else notice a difference in sound between the thermal reactor cars and the catalytic cars?

I bought that 12A intake kit on rx7.com.
It sounds really good at full throttle. Not too much more power though.
I would have bought racing beats kit but I don't know how to rip off the emissions.

Who cares what it sounds like as long as its fast? I could care less what my bridgeport sounds like as long as it puts me back in the seat when I ask it to, and yes, it does sound nice at WOT or any throttle, but that is besides the point to me really. As long as the whole noise package isn't bothering when driving for long distances and goes fast. Is this just me or is this just boil down to a image thing?

Image my ***, I happen to really enjoy the sound of a decent intake setup. Lovely note I'd say.
