How much room around it , drill and tap 4 holes at the corners then make a steel cover plate to match get a gasket that will take exhaust tempts

Welcome to the joys of having 79-80 parts put onto 81 and up blocks... Best advice is to put the stock stuff back on, like RMD says... only other thing I can think of is to find someone who'll weld it shut... but I don't think anyone will want to touch it.

300 degrees is probably the melt down point for that stuff.....

JB weld starts to shrink at that temperature... Youc ould try it, but I think you'd have to do numerous applications, running it in between each application...

You need to have a bit of aluminum welded on to cover that port. I've never done it or had it done, but it's a fairly common thing to do.

wait, are we talking the two little ports right below the EXHAUST manifold, or the INTAKE manifold???!!! I wasn't aware of any below the INTAKE

I had the two little oval shaped ports below my EXHAUST manifold on my '79 engine welded shut, so I could run a later model manifold/header, but what we did was make little round steel plugs for INSIDE the MAIN exhaust ports. We made the a couple thous bigger than they should've been, pressed them in with a flat blade screwdriver, and then just tack welded them into the steel exhaust sleeves... much easier....

but your are talking about a 79 engine or a 85 engine, because the swap was the 79 intake manifold into a 85 engine. and i im talking about a rectangular hole below the intake, on the top of the exhaust, and exhaust come out of it. can you explaind what are you talking about? because i dont understand.

keaponlaffen's talking about the '80-earlier engines which have air ports near the exhaust ports.

'81-85 engines have an air injection port directly under the center two intake ports, air goes right from the ACV into those ports to go to the exhaust ports. That hole has to be blocked off somehow or you'll basically have a big exhaust leak right under the intake manifold.

BEST way to solve this is to plug the air injection ports in the exhaust ports themselves, but this requires the engine to be disassembled.

i just made a gasket that covered the hole. however, keep in mind i've never used a 79 intake manifold, so i don't know if the 79 intake will cover it or not, but i didn't have any problems with it burning the gasket for the years that i ran 12A's.
