Angry Intake manifold stuck to block

Anyone have a suggestion for freeing up the intake manifold from the block? I got the carb off, the 4 bolts and 2 nuts holding the intake manifold on, but the manifold will not let go of the block. Anyone have some suggestions for breaking it loose?

I have it soaking in PB Blaster now.

Like that's really going to do anything.

Do you have a plastic hammer?

I've had more luck with a plastic hammer. It's harder but won't hurt aluminum.

There are a couple hard to get at bolts you may have forgotten, make sure you have them all. Just look at a new gasket and you'll figure where the are.

yup. i've taken the intake manifold off multiple times on different cars and always tend to forget 1 bolt or so. if it wont come off after a whack or two with a rubber mallet do not force it, check for more bolts

Thanks guys. I am off to buy a plastic hammer. If all goes well, I'll have the new gasket and o-rings installed in time to catch the second half of the Giants game.

Go "G"men

Hey Mike, you also might want to consider HOW you hit it. Many gaskets will survive as a whole if you shear them rather than just pull it apart. Even if you don't want to reuse the gasket, it'll mean that you only have to scrape it off of one face rather than let it rip and stick to both. Try to hit the mani from the front and rear of the car so you that you twist it off the block, rather than just come from the driver's side to tear it.

Just a thought. If you're still stuck later, I'll be happy to help, too.

Oh no...

Plastic hammer beats intake manifold. I managed to crack the intake manifold beating it with the plastic hammer. And it is still on the car.

Any ideas?

Something is obviously very wrong. Try shoving something like a broom handle down one of the holes. Pry it kind of up and down to see whether it even moves. Sounds to me like you missed a bolt or nut.

Is it possible you've mistaken 1 or more of the bolts/nuts you've removed - in other words 2 or more of the 6 belong to something else (heatshields?), and a couple of fixings are still tight up. Sorry if it sounds patronising but as said above, something is very wrong - the manifold must come loose before it starts to break, its not held by more than a gasket!

Oooooh, or you've removed an exhaust nut which you thought was a lower mani nut. Check your exhaust studs to see if they're naked.
