Rotate the engine by hand clockwise until the first mark lines up with the pin. Then poke the gear into the hole with the flat side of the shaft (where the rotor sits) facing forward. The gear is curved so you'll probably need to redo this a couple times untill the reluctor tip is closest to the leading (front) pickup while still allowing the clean spot on the base plate to line up with the lock-down bolt hole in the front cover.

I'm not sure if any of that made any sense to you. I don't know how to explain things to newbies very well. Sorry.

First be sure that the motor is at TDC as outlined above. Then line up the little dimple on the distributor drive gear (not the roll-pin hole) with the little pointer cast into the distributor body and stick it in the hole.

I gave up on the little dimple or the F mark a long time ago. I've seen several that didn't match up the way they were supposed to.

I just go by the flat spot on the shaft. It's also more convenient.

Whoah, this just made my head hurt, because I forgot all about a distributor running off of anything but a cam. And of course no cams here. I'm gonna go lay down.

A cam would make my head hurt, if I beat myself over the head with it.
