Question Install back seats

I have an 85 rx7, has anyone ever taken the storage compartments out and put in seats? My 15 year old wants to "pimp that ride" and rear seats would afford him the oppurtunity to haul more classmates around. We already took out the compartments and are blindly pressing on.

The 1st gen is really made for the driver and 1 passenger. The backseat will have NO room at all. Carl

Japanese and Austrailian versions of the RX-7 had rear seats. But I do not know how roomy they were.
I wouldn't reccomend making room for more classmates in a teenagers car. Many states are currently considering laws to limit anyone under 18 from having more than 1 passenger, for safety reasons. Of course, I wouldn't turn a RX-7 over to a teenager as their first car, but thats just me. First cars are normally also the first car they crash........

I think it would be a great car for him to learn on, definately can teach him about maintenance, personally tho I wouldnt add seats, it takes away the intimacy of the car, as a matter of fact I am even thinking about taking out the passenger seat, that way its just me, the car and the road. No nagging wifey

In the canadian forum there's a guy "smnc", who put back seats in because he had a kid.

They aren't very roomy, not the kind of place that 15yr olds would really fit in.. Unless they're really small 15 yr olds.

Yes, you can put back seats in, but it's not worth it for his application. He'd be better to remove the storage bins and turn them into subwoofer boxes instead

15 yr olds shouldn't really have Rx7s yet anyway

Jon

Don't know for sure but I think 86' and up had back seats. As we looked at the back even one passenger back there would have to sit sideways. At this point it is mostly to humor the lad and I will probably end up putting it back together but we are having fun working together and he's learning as we go.

If a youngster has to crash the first car I think the rx7 would be a good car to do it in because of how well the car is built. I understand there is a bit of a roll cage built in from the factory.

You just need to buy one of them with all the parts. there is less then 6inches of leg room between the rear seat and the back of the front seat.

I saw one 10 years back in a junk yard - not too roomy. My first car was an 81 rx7 and it taught me alot about basic car mechanics ( starters, alternators, brakes) and was a sweet ride too! Skip the seats and keep the bins - its a great place to hide beer! ;-)

Mine is in a 79. does fit fit correctly because the 79 and 80 are made different then the 81 - 85, You can expect to pay 150 to 500 for a real one from a first gen.

the backseats from a 240 sx fit in the back very well leg room is a problem but u can cram ppl back there with the front seats all the way forward. for seatbelts and brakets to hold it in u will have to drill and make your own but that what i have done twice now.

i was 15 when i got my 7 ,the car is a great learning car , helps you learn alot of things about RWD . You also get alot of practice driving a 5 speed! They also teach you to keep up maitenence! but putting back seats in to haul more people around isnt worth it. He would be better off buying a 300zx 2+2

i had rear seats for some time and i am about 6'4", there is exactly 3.5 inches of space between the back of my seat and the front of the rear seat. Rx-7 rear seats are for 6yrs or younger passengers. My newest project is a single rear seat, not facing forward but better yet facing to the side. the back is against the passenger side and the feet go in the drivers side.

im 16 and i have a FB...whats so bad about it, I take care of it and I have you guys to help me out if I ever run into any deep trouble that I can't solve myself. Gotta start and learn somewhere.

And rear seats...i would image it would be very cramped...maybe worst than sitting in a FC with rear seats..

isaac,
I am leaning toward your idea with the one side seat. I would imagine, even with the 2 seats, you would have to sit sideways anyway. then again, one side for speakers and one side with a cooler for beer is starting to sound good
