Talking I'm officially a 1st gen guy!

Hey guys, I've had my 89 gtu for a while and been trying to work on it, but keep getting stuck getting parts when I have money.

Anyway, I decided to get rid of my daily driver (Honda Civic, which I love) and bought a white 82 GS from my neighbor. It's got 103k miles, 2+2 seating, refinished interior, modified carb, all emissions removed... and it's pretty quick. Overall, it's in excellent shape and I'm very happy with it. It's a bit different having a car with a carb and choke, but I'll get used to it.

I'm going to get some pics up this week, just wanted to say hi!

"Welcome to the dark side" I'm not sure why everyone says it but I guess it just feels right

I'm not sure if selling your DD and getting an FB was the smarest thing you did but I'm sure it's not on the top of the list. Unless fo course you have another DD.

Fb's aren't the most reliable cars in the world but they sure are ******* fun. You'll be throwing money at it like the star stripper at a gentleman's club. And only then will she make you happy.

The 2+2 seeting is good for two people and two smal grocery bags lol but everything else sounds like it's all good. Good luck and I'm sure you'll find everything you need in the FAQ section, if not then feel free to ask.

And you might want to start saving up some money. With 103k original miles...something's gonna go wrong.

well, i realize it's not exactly the grocery getter, but just something to drive back and forth to work, and have a little fun with. forgot to mention it's streetported with 2.5" exhaust.

I know the guy I bought it from and it's been pretty meticulously cared for, down to using the OE Mazda oil filter whenever he could find them.

it was an opportunity and I took it. I can buy a civic any day of the week. this is a bit more rare, so I thought i'd try something different. i don't expect it to be perfect, i mean it's a year older than me, but i'm one step closer to my goal owning 1 from each generation

I have own two 7 so far, if you keep them well maintain they will be nice as a daily driver. I can't complain about having a FB as a daily driver and only you replace parts because, you know is a 20+ year car. Things are need to be replace occasionaly and with hard driving and a good beating you will have to spend more money faster due to the stress. At least that is my experience with them.

"Fb's aren't the most reliable cars in the world"

Yup utter nonsense. I replaced my 244 Volvo with an 84 GSL for my daily driver (110 miles per day round trip) precisely because it was much more reliable, less expensive and, yes, more fun.

Check out the current daily driver at:

http://www.cardomain.com/ride/479957/16
http://www.cardomain.com/ride/479957/17

$1,545 on ebay, 25,000 miles on in it 8 months, 23-24 mpg, fast, nimble and going strong.

Ray

the only time a car becomes un reliable is when the owner just dosnt care

i spent at least 500$ on replacing bits n peices because the p/o did not give a lil tlc

I have seen very few 2nd gen pass the 200k mark, there is a good sized list of 1st gens that have passed that mark and an occasional 300k.

They are as reliable as the the owner/po owners, sometimes moreso.

Dark Side?, after I bought my 1st 7, a 2nd gen, I too wanted all 3 gens. After I bought the 1st of many 1st gens, forget the 3rd, I want more older ones. I guess part of the dark side is buying an old school rotary, then spending 2-3 or more times than you paid for it, fixing/modding/restoring and all of your spare/free time is now taken, along with some time that shouldn't be. Dark side, Dark Obsession, Dark Addiction, take your pick.

yea very realiable cars i have around 250k miles on mine but the odometer is also broken and was broken with the other owner so i have no idea where its at, car still runs very strong though only have little problems with the body mainly. im even thinking of selling my crown victoria daily driver and trying to get another first gen in almost perfect condition but that would mean driving it in snow in winter.

Haha, you guys are great. I read the whole post about them not being reliable and was like "wtf? Mine is reliable so long as I'm not taken parts off waiting for better parts in the mail." Then reading you guys talking about them being reliable put a smile on my face. Oh yes.

But welcome to the first gen section. Enjoy your stay, and I'm pretty sure you'll be here to stay (forget the FC, move to the better of the two.) And I have to agree with Trochoid. When I bought my first FB I thought I was going to get an FC and then later on down the road get an FD too, but now I reconsidered. When I was looking for another Rx 7 I bought another FB, and I guarantee my next rotary will be even older (I am thinking Rx3 Wagon when the time comes).

I've had mine for 22 years (since new) and its left me stranded ONCE. Not counting when I left the hatch un-latched and killed the battery but even then I push started it!!

The 1st gens are totally reliable, if they have not been neglected. My '83 has 200K on it, and just yesterday I took it for a 400 mile round trip to pick up a glass sunroof for it.
How many other 20+ year old cars, with 200K+ on them, would be up for for that kind of trip.
The ones that give the 1st gen a bad rap for being unreliable, generally have cars that were left parked for too long, and have issues from corroded electrical items, and fuel system.
Preventive maintainance is required for any car to remain in a reliable condition. That's why it's call preventive maintainance......

Congrats on your first 1st gen! As others have said, treat her right and she'll give you many years of reliable fun. Whereas 2nd and (especially) 3rd gens are maintenance nightmares, 1st gens are the exception.

Now lets see some pics!

Not too shabby! I too have had the bite of the first gen every since I was a teenager. One of my best friends had a first gen that "took me for ride" that I would never forget. We always called him the burnout king! I have had my '83 GSL fo about 5 years now, and I can't stop modding and customizing it. I have other rides that I love just as well, but my RX7 will always be my baby. You will fall into the dark side so fast that you will never be able to walk away from the mighty Rotary! Good find on another first gen.

Excellent, love the white colors and raised white letters. Of course I am prejudiced.

nice!

it's in pretty good shape. a little rust on the bottom (inside) of the doors, and it's missing the trim piece to the rear of the passenger door. it's got some chips in the paint, but not bad unless you get pretty close to it. the wheels need some cleaning. really, i'd like to get hold of a set of the mesh special editions, but i bet those go pretty quick.

im pretty happy so far. just makes me want to get my FC going that much more.

I've got that trim piece if you want it, just pm me a shipping address. Unless the white stripe down the middle makes it a special piece (never seen this before) but I'm assuming that you painted it in. Mine are all black.

So do your tires have the raised white letters? From you photos it's hard to tell because they are spinning all the time, but it looks like they might be.

Good luck with the project, be sure to pull out the storage bins and check for rust on the rear wheel wells, a common 1st gen problem that can be fatal if you don't catch it in time. You can probably stop or slow that door rust by replacing the window seals (Mazdatrix or Mazda dealer, about $15 each), they usually start to crack and let water in.

thanks ray!

yes, the tires on there right now are road huggers! i kinda like the look with the white letters, but the tires aren't the grippiest.

there is a little rust at work on the bottom of the doors, but I haven't looked at the wheel wells. i definitely need to replace the window seals on both doors. I went through the carwash and got soaked.
