Ignition Ideas

The other day when i took my GSL-SE on a spirited drive to knock out come carbon i noticed i had ignition break up. i thought no problem so i kept going at it since i thought it was the carbon buildup. well it worked and i was all smiles for 2 weeks. then on my way to the track i decided to open her up a lil bit. well now the breakup-came back and is now worse. it wont rev past 4.5k and sounds like a 2-step rev limit.... i know the culprit could be just my plugs but i decided since the ignition system is a bit dated i decided i want to freshen up that area

what i am looking for is performance everything for the ignition but i dont want to go 2nd gen swap or use MSD. just something to freshen up and have a little performance boost/ better response and a lil bit of a mileage increase.

some of my local rotary gurus tell me get OEM dizzy cap and rotor, so thats already taken care of

all im looking for is:

coils
Wires
any ideas?

i am currently searching the forum as i write this but all im finding are 2nd gen conversions and MSD setups.

the 2nd gen conversion is VERY easy. i recommend it. just try it, youll be pleased. also, are you sure your ignitor isnt going out?

im not sure if theres an easier way. you could swap the ignitors and see if it rives better. im not sure, but i pretty much assure you that the ignitor may be the source for you problems. i had the same issue when my ignitor started flaking. i wasnt aware at the time what it was. i was eventually left sitting on the side of the road. so get a new ignitor

NEW?! arent they like $200? i already spent my budget on "rotary stuff" for the next month or so buying a 12A core with tranny for $200. and i dont plan on buying anything that expensive until i payoff my CC and personal loan($800 dollars to go WOOHOO!). unless you know of any cheaper places?

there are no 13Bs in recyle-yards in my area... just TONS(literally there are like a total of 20 or more) 12A RX-7's from 83-85.

Good thread telling how to swap over to the 23nd gen coil. It was super easy to do.

i suggest you find the problem and correct it before you attempt to upgrade.

I was chasing an ignition breakup issue for a few weeks, but couldn't really completely eliminate it even with new cap/rotor/plugs/wires/ground wire. The day of my last race (Saturday) I stopped and grabbed some Seafoam (a fairly regular habit for me) and dumped it into my nearly empty gas tank. Within a few minutes she was ripping all the way to 8 grand again. Good stuff.

Also, the 2nd gen coil pack is a nice upgrade over stock and incredibly simple to do. If you are going to replace your plug wires anyway, then now is the time to do this. Get a set of custom wires where you cut them to length and put the ends on. That way, you'll end up with leading wires that are only about 4 inches long going from the coil pack straight to the plugs. If I can get my camera back from my buddy (just had a baby) I'll snap some photos for you.

sounds good to me.

UPDATE!!
the GSL-SE my friend has doesnt have the dizzy or any of the ignition intact. apparently someone ripped it out a few nights ago and now im stuck between a rock and a hard place. before i even change the ignitor with a new one(big @$$ hole in my wallet for such a small part!!! $200)

does anyone know how to check the ignitor? im not too sure but i dont think its my ignitor. i want to double check everything before i make purchases that arent necessary. it might be my fuel pump/ filter needs replacing but im going to do that once im on "E" so i dont loose gas as i have a good condition pump out of the wrecked GSL-SE i got today

Do you have an extra spark plug? If so, a simple yet slightly dangerous way to test the ignitor and its coil is to remove all wires from the plugs. Connect a leading wire to the plug and ground it by resting the base of the plug on one of the strut tower touching some bare metal. Crank the car and look for spark, but Don't touch it!!! Repeat with a trailing or do them both at the same time.

Yes, but it could still be the coil, but not likely. Coils seem to last forever though. Leading ignitor is closer to the nose of the car.

Good news. No need for ignitors.

Change the filter, but hold off on the pump unless you already have one.

Right, Fuel injection.

Have you checked your engine trouble code?
