Idling too high

I have a 83 rx7(12a) When I start it, it idles fine at about 500 rpms, but once I reve past 2000 or so rpms it sticks there, even after I let off the gas, And sometimes it goes ahead and Idles at 3000.

What is doing this ?

Thanx

maybe your throttle cable is binding....have you tried pulling up on the gas pedal when it idles high?

Yeah, The cable is free, not binding. Is there a spring somewhere that pulls the cable back, after the peddle is let off ?

yeah theres a spring that pulls it back, yours might be stretched and hence not working, on my fury this spring occasionally slips off forcing the car to rev wildly.

Idle should be 750-800. Check your butterflys, they might be binding if everything else is ok.

How does it act when the choke is off? Anyway, sounds like sticky linkages to me. Soak the linkages down with a good carb cleaner, then with PB Blaster. Work it all back and forth to get it loosened up, then try again.

if the above checks out, vacuum leaks are a possibility, or even exhaust leaks...

How exactly are the above symptoms possibly connected to a vacuum or exhaust leaks?
