Idler arm removal, i'm stuck!

I've got ALL the nuts and bolts off, except for where the arm connects to the cross bar.

The nut came off just fine, but the actual bolt that it screws onto seems to be rusted into the cross bar (the bar that goes under the oil pan).

Its soking in wd40 right now (thats all i got) any other reccomendations?

thanks!!

Geoff

It needs to be separated like a ball joint. Try a puller or pickle fork.

Ok, well, here ya go.

I got this puller thing, an arm that clamps around each side, and the screw that pushes it through. the center.

It bent the the tool, adn the tool managed to drill a small hole into the center of the bolt.

This thing is IN THERE!!!!!!!

I had the same problem... those regular gear pullers don't work for **** and I couldn't find my tie rod seperator. I even tried bashing the **** out of it with a hammer and only succeeded in damaging the threads on the bolt (luckily I had a spare arm). In the end I got it off by wedging a steel bar between the arm and the crossmember and levering it up with the floor jack.

Anyway, just do what rich367 said and get a tie rod end/ball joint seperator... it should pop right off.

Gear puller's suck for seperating steering joints... besides he said he already tried one.

Try fire No seriously, you can use a torch to heat the area of the centerlink that the pitman arm connects to. This will expand the hole and make it easier to separate. You'll also need to use a tie rod end separator (like the one you bent). Try not to heat the pitman arm bolt/stud or it will expand too. And BE CAREFUL! This is the technique I had to use to get my pitman arm separated from the gear box (after I had broken a pitman arm separator from AutoZone and had to ask them for another one!). It should work for your situation too.

anytime u hammer on such things, it's always a good idea to screw the nut back on it enough so not to damage the threads.
