How to Measure Bolt Pattern

Does anybody know how to measure the bolt pattern and find out what size it is i.e. 110 or whatever? Also, I assume that measurement represents millimeters?

I'm kind of lost here and I'd love to be able to figure out a way of doing it in the yard short of jacking up my car and slapping the wheel on. And since I'm curious, how would you do it for a five bolt as well as a four?

Measure 4 lug: 2 lugs straight across from each other, center to center. Metric conversion- divide by 25.4. Not really sure bout 5 lug tho, sorry.
