Question Idle WAY High!!!

Ok, here's the deal: I just bought my first 7 ( '81, 12a, stock carb) for $500 just for something to fix up and have a little fun with. As soon as I got it I did all the basic maintenance (changed oil, all new filters, plugs/wires, flushed cooling sys, etc.). Well, I still wasn't getting very much power and after a compression check showed my engine wasn't dead, I figured maybe the 22 yr. old carb could use a rebuild.

Well, I went out, got a kit, and everything went great until I broke the plastic where the vacuum line goes to the passenger side of the shutter solenoid valve. I didn't think much of it, and just hot glued it back together, making sure of a good seal and not blocking flow. I got everything together and now I have this wierd problem: this Damn POS starts to Idle at 3k (choke off) to 3.5k (choke on) and slowly creeps up to almost 5k. WTF?????

I checked my float level. They measure good and the fuel sits right in the middle of the windows. I checked the idle speed and mixture screws: lightly seated and backed out 2 and 4 turns respectively, right where the kit instructions say. I can't find any vacuum leaks and everything is hooked up exactly how it was when it came off. Any Idea what could cause this? Shutter valve, maybe? I don't know much about these older cars, so any suggestions would be great.

make sure the accel linkage is not too tight, take the air filter box completly off and plug up the hoses and lube all linkages and see if secondaries are completly closing,,something is giving it more gas somewhere...good luck

With all the linkages, are you sure you don't have the cable in the wrong place?? Have you tried to be sure the acc. cable has enough "slack" to allow it to close all the way?? There is a mechanism (sorry don't remember what it is called) that has a "sleeve" or cover over the spring and a shaft with "ears" (pins) that ride over a lever that could be off. Also check the linkage for the secondaries on the front side and the OMP linkage as well.

Like the two posters above have stated, it's probably a mis-connected linkage. Check and re-check your work against a factory or Haynes manual to ensure everything is connected properly.

Maybe a vaccum leak. I had one that rose the idle to 3k, it sounded like a vaccum cleaner was running like mad in the engine bay. Hear any big sucking noises?
