Question Idle/Throttle on 83 GS

I have a prob. with my idle not going below 1100 ever and when i try to take off it sputters and act like its going to die. If I just give it gas it will die like it was flooded. I have to feather the gas to get the idle to go up enough to take off, and it runs ruff until it catches up with whats happening. Once I get it to idle up higher it seems to smooth out but just touching the gas from take off you think it will die unless to ease into it very slowly. I also can smell the cat going bad do anyone think that might be the prob?

Are you putting MMO in your gas? Since I started adding 8oz MMO to each tankful both motors are running smoother. The 83 idle is so smooth you can't tell it's running!

I suspect you either have vacuum leaks or a congested carb. I assume your plugs, plug wires and dist cap are good.

you can smell the cat going bad? meaning you can smell gas? does it spew black or white smoke? backfire?

sounds like a hyperactive carb to me... may need rebuilt, or it might just need adjusted. How's it run up higher in the RPM range? My friend's GS runs liek that, but mostly just because he's got a 650double pumper on it..

Come out and meet us some Wedesday night It's fun! Welcome to the board....

Unfortunately, I'm not much of a carb guru... I just know when it isn't right...

yeah, that's where we've been meeting for about a year now pretty much every Wed it's not raining too hard.

We usually BS for awhile, then go for a cruise or something and end up at a place to get food/beer... It's great fun
