Idle speed....

On my '84, the idle was sitting at about 850 or 900 rpm when I got the car. I just located a large vaccuum leak and the idle jumped up to 1300 or so upon repair. I found my idle speed screw (what a stupid f-ing place for one!!!) and began to turn it out ever so slowly (because it's challenging to turn under 8000000 vaccuum lines). I've turned it over completely like 3 or 4 times outward with no effect. Clockwise increases and counter clockwise decreases idle speed right? How many turns does the stupid thing need to come back down?

Timing and mixture will also affect the idle speed. start with timing, making sure it's dialed in. Then start working with both screws.

Check this thread out. It explains it in detail not too far in.

Hmmm.... the idle speed screw doesn't do anything. Turning it in or out has no effect on the speed. What's going on?

Did read the first post in that link I put up? Sterling states that if the idle screw has no affect then you still have air leaking somewhere (paraphrase). Check out what he says, its a pretty good description of the Nikki idle adjustment.
