Look for vacuum leaks. Is it a GSL-SE?

Is it carbed, or fuel injected? Also, look at the engine, near the distributor, there should be either 12A or 13B cast into the rotor housings. A carb under a blue air cleaner means a 12a, unless someone has made some major mods.

What style carb does it have? A stock nikki has different items to check for the symptoms you describe, than say a weber side draft setup. It does sound like major vacuum leaks though. Could also be a badly tuned carb.

Not that much, on one that has no vacuum leaks from the rats nest. Makes a major difference in one that has numerous vacuum leaks from the lines and solinoids of the nest. That is mainly just for improving the emmissions with the factory setup still intact. Without the cats and rest of the emission system in place, the rats nest is just about worthless, as it can cause many vacuum leaks.
If you live in an area where there is no emission testing, or plan to use the car for racing (track) only, then removing the entire emission system frees up some HP, most gains are from losing the cats. Those are very restrictive.
