idle problem

alright on the stock 12a intake hat theres a hole right next to the idle control, right now my car idles like 450-500 and it runs like crap but when i put my finger over the hole it runs amazing it idles perfect at 750 and doesnt shake at all, well i have no idea what this line does i dont know where it goes either. would it be safe to block the hole? i mean is there a bigger problem some where...if i have to i can take a video of it.

Download the carb manual from the following link and find it. Only thing I've found that affects idle like that is a 3/8" hose that plugs into the bottom of the air cleaner.

Sounds like the line for the idle compensator. Normally opened by a bimetal thermostat in the air cleaner after the car's up to heat.

If it's open early, it's basically a vacuum leak.

Yup. I call that the "Shudder" valve. When it's bad, it sure makes the engine shudder at low RPM.....

That's what many people do. The car should run fine. You might get a little back firing during deceleration.

An exhaust leak will make the backfiring much worse.

Pictures, so much easier...

The backfiring might be part of the reason for the exhaust leaks, too. They do have some force behind them.
