idels at 3000 rpm

ok my rx7 just started to idel at 3000 rpm yesterday, i think i stretched the throttle cable. could this cause the problem also i think it is the throttle cable because it will just accelerate on its own. does anyone have any clue to what could be causing this

If a throttle cable streches, it frays, rarely happens. Check the linkages on the carb and clean them, they are more likely sticking instead.

the carb is spitting out a lot of gas could this be due to the linkages that you were talking about. plus when i turn it off it backfires sometime (the muffler goes pop)

Floats may be sticking, tap the sides of the carb to try and loosen them, then start cleaning all the built up gunk on the outside and run a can of Seafoam through the tank.

When you get the outside clean, check the fuel level in both sight windows. The FAQ sticky at the top of the forum has a good carb trouble shooting section.

Mine idled like that a while ago.

MASSIVE vacuum leak.

Get some carb cleaner spray and randomly spray in areas. If the idle gets higher after a spray then its being sucked in by a leak.

check to see if the butterflys are closing all the way...if they are sticking open, check for obstructions around the throttle linkages on the firewall side and on the front side where the rod goes from the front linkage to the oil metering pump.

Why do people think a vacuum leak causes a high idle?

BRs85RX7, do a search. I posted causes for unusually high idle not too long ago.

I think therefore I am?

I think mine still idles at around 2000rpm now. I haven't tracked down all of my leaks since my alternator blew and I had to stop.

One or more of your cats could be clogged up a bit. try taking off you cats and see if it idles better, but I don't know if clogged cats could cause high idle.

Clogged cats could cause NO idle, but not a high idle.
Stuck/sticking throttle linkage/cable or vacuum leak. But, it would have to be a big leak. Check the brake booster hose that comes off the back of the intake manifold.
