bingo! its fun to drive in the same way as the 1st gens, but it rides better, its quieter, faster, better stereo etc etc.

its like a 1st gen but more grown up, which is ok, cause so are we

and chicks dig it.

miata is close, but not quite there, although the top goes down,

everything else is way off

 

The only car I can see replacing one of my rotaries would be a 56 Porsche Speedster. Last good car they made.

 

i have nothing against people who buy expensive cars like that, but promise me you will use it for its purpose. Don't WEAR the car, DRIVE the car.

The Lotus would be a great choice!

I was faced with the same issue a few years ago. I wanted a new sports car to replace the my 7. I looked at Miata's (another good choice and was on my short list) and RX-8's (to be honest I was disappointed) as well as some pre-owned Porsche's. Then a friend of mine convinced me to try out a SVT Cobra and this is what I ended up with.



I ended up keeping my RX-7 since I could not part with it. I love both cars and you'd be suprised how many RX-7 owners own Mustang's and Cobra's.

 

Lotus Exige or Mazda Miata ... in that order. although the Rx-8 might seem like the logical (and ONLY) current choice, i simply don't think they captured the spirit. i've never driven one though, so take what i say with a grain of salt.
