My 13B na into first gen project so far

for those that haven't seen any of my previous posts, I have a 82 first gen, stock 12A. Managed to find a tii plus tranny here in Cape Town, South Africa. After having researched the tii conversion, decided not to go turbo but go n/a with the series 5 motor and box. Motor has been stripped down, rebuilt with street port. thanks to Mazdatrix i have fitted modified front mount bar and modified sump. Have also changed the front cover and done the tranny mod and fabricated a custom tranny mount. Car has had a custom driveshaft fitted and balanced. The light is at the end of the tunnel and getting brighter !

still to be done :

fit custom exhaust from header back
fit intake manifold and weber 48ida
fit tii alternator
fit radiator and oil cooler
wire everything up

and then fire her up !

(have attached some pics as well....enjoy !)

yeah..i had to answer that question many times. When that tii motor and tranny was offered to me I took it and the plan then was to go turbo. But my first gen had the stock 12A so was not the gsl-se and then the further i got into researching the more i realised how costly it would be.....fuel lines replacing, microtech system, etc, etc it became just too expensive. So then the question was...do i overhaul and streetport the 12A or the 13B ? So I decided to go with the 13B.

but having said all that....I still have the turbo and manifold....and who knows, maybe in a year or two I might go for a blow thru set up....hopefully mazdatrix have a carb hat for the IDA

parts are very hard to come by here in South Africa....thanks to this forum I have discovered VB (or black dragon) as they call themselves now, Mazdatrix and also Rob from Pineapple racing.

progress !

progress is slow but sweet.

notice the alt is on...so is the intake manifold and i put the carb on to see what it looks like. Notice the fuel pressure regulator....and also my blue rotor shaped oil cap. Also notice the tap in the manifold for the brake booster. Am currently doing the wiring. Since that pic i have refitted the radiator, oil cooler and shroud.
The only thing i need to outsource now is the exhaust....then its time to FIRE HER UP !

Man that is looking good. I am doing the same thing but mine is a streetported s5. I am actually having mine powdercoated lolly pop blue and keeping the rotor housings clear cloated the natuaral metal look. I also painted my engine bay flat black which makes a huge difference. You need to post some vids of the start up!!! Keep it up man.

Looking good!

Question.....how did you plug the primary injector ports in the center iron?
In the 2nd picture,it almost looks like they were never there......

thats my mechanic Evert....I don't know what he used but he closed up those primary holes and painted them over as well. He also closed up the water points where the intake manifold goes (don't know if you can see it in the pics) - my intake manifold has no channel for water so it therefore had to be closed up.

you will also see that i have the omp on there and have connect it to the stock injector ports. I am still toying with the idea of going premix or not.

If i don't go premix, then do the tops of those two injectors need a vacuum source or can they just be left open like that ?

also, i guess it goes without saying i need to conenct that plunger thing between the carb and the omp to tell the omp to pump more oil when the carb is giving more fuel

I think you just plug them up with screws if I am not mistaken. Then again I might be wrong.

man, that's looks like it's going to be a pretty hot setup you've got there. definitely keep posting and don't be scared to post more pics. just out of curiosity, i noticed the number of American places you're getting parts from, isn't Australia a little closer - geographically speaking, of course - you should be able to get some of what you need. just a thought.

excellent work!

yeah, i was tripping over that for a while. i looked at that photo about 5 separate times, thinking that there was a 13B type out there that i did not know of.

yeah i guess aussie is closer, geographically speaking

but i find the americans are more helpful and more 'jacked up' aussies are too laid back. as an example....I ordered the front mount bracket from mazdatrix in Cali on a friday and the following friday it was here via fedex ! I think there are much more flights daily and so much more trade going this way than from aussie. Also, exchange rate is quite favourable with the Rand/US$ where it is. Back in 2001 we hit a low of R13/$....now its back to R6/$...so my costs of importing parts have halved as the Rand has come back but the $ prices of most parts have remained flat, if not come off slightly.

Just in case you guys thought i have dissappeared into the rotary black hole....no, I am still here. Last few weeks have been spent trying to find someone to finish off my exhaust system. You guys have it so easy....one phone call and a few days later a complete RB street port full system arrives. A system that is tried and tested and with steel packing specifically for the rotary. Well...no such luck over here. Tell an exhaust shop you want a silencer with steel packing and he scratches his head....only fibre packing available. Lots of backyard guys doing their own thing from chicken wire mesh to lathe filings. Anyways, to cut a long story short, I went down to the local race track during a meeting...started tracking down anyone in a rotary...and got chatting as to where they got their system from. Found one good fellow....drives an old R100 with a bridgeport and 51 IDA....he was sure giving those V8's some trouble. Anyways, he built up a system for me. Made up a rear box with a removable end so that I can replace the packing when I need to. Quite a neat job....will post some pics this week. While he has been doing that (obviously bespoke system takes a while) I have been prepping the rest of my stuff....eg putting the linkage on the IDA with a return spring, adding a valve on the intake manifold for the brake booster, etc.
Next Saturday looks like START UP DAY ! I will keep all of you guys posted.

Its started !

What a night !

the plan was to start the baby tomorrow.....but I couldn't wait. After work I dropped off the wife and kids at her parent's place. I then went to local motor spares place and bought a can of oil and a couple of pints of anti freeze. Back home to the RX. On with the intake gasket and o-rings. On with the intake manifold. On with the carb. Fuel hose from carb to regulator. Filled up with antifreeze. DAMN ! A leak....luckily on the top end near water pump. Remove hose, drain slightly and file smooth. On with the gasket sealer and back on with the hose. Continue filling water. No more leak. Fill up with oil. Finally, in with the battery. Ignition on....dash lights come on.....I hear the pump whirring away...I can see the filter filling up with the green stuff (I have the filter in front before the regulator). Turn the key....and whay hay...she fired straight up !

Turned the idling screw up on the IDA and let her idle at around 2000. All dash lights off....means that the rewired alt must be working as well ! Showing a nice 12 volts on the voltmeter. Temp gauge starts to move...goes about 1/3 of the way and stays there.

stand back and admire the beast and have a beer. Warming up now, turn down the idle screw and let her tick over at 800-1000rpm. Give her a flick of the throttle....waap..waap...wummm......boy she is horny.....her ports wanting every drop from that IDA....waap..waaap....she settles down to a steady throb. No smoke...no wires burning. SUCCESS

switch her off, then after a few seconds turn the key again without giving petrol.....2 swings and she's up and running again. This calls for some more pics....and i'm going to try and post a video as well.

I can't believe it went so well. Now just to tidy up the engine bay, wires etc, then onto the road !

(series 5 13b street port with 48 IDA, tii box, competition clutch, custom driveshaft, RB street header and custom exhaust)

Good job man. Little worried about the alt though, it should be showing at least 14 volts.

I know just how you feel when they first fire up, after that I start worrying about every little detail, but usually stay as happy as a __________, you can fill in the blank.

Check the voltage with a multimeter. The stock gauge is not very accurate.

If your battery is fresh and fully charged, it should show 12.5-12.8 volts. A multimeter or aftermarket gauge should confirm or reject the stock gauge reading.

another satisfying day. hearing that baby purr...or should I say bark...sure makes everything worrthwhile. Voltage readings is up...not the solid 12 line, but more around 13, so thats ok. changed the oil pressure sender for one from a 12A. This time it didn't go all the way across, but only went to 30....I dunno...maybe senders are not interchangeable ? tucked all the wires away nicely, double checked the wheel nuts and fluid levels then took her out on the road...careful not to exceed 4000rpm in each gear. pulled nice and strong...very pleased. Now just to clock up those miles so the seals are seated nicely....then time to open up.
have posted some more pics. also made a vid which is about 30mb, but where can I post so u guys can view ?
