Anyone have pix of 1st gen staionary headlights. I want to get ideas "fur me ryde"

We just had a thread about this. There are no existing kits for a first gen, 'cause to make one with any kind of effectiveness would cost at least $400 per set

WTF! What do u mean gay? I saw this conversion once in person and it gave the car a very Jap.look it made the car seem lower, wider, and all around more pristine. Does'nt matter any way cause to each is own.

 

im with you. i started the last thread about it. i think i could manufacture a set, for a fee. not sure how much yet. i'll have to try it on my car first, see how much money/labor is involved. but when i get it done, i will post pics and give prices. there are others on the forrum thinking about doing it as well. hopefully one of them will beat me to it, cause im slow.

my compliments on how you avoided the flame war that could have arrisen. to each his own. after all, if we were all the same, the world would be a very dull place.

 

i agree..ive been interested in this subject for awhile now and would be interested to see how it turns out..i really dont like my pop-ups and they are definitly not bright enough...

 

some cars it works out good, the lights function well and
driving at night, well they just work, with a clear piece of plexi over the top. the problem is that even with projector lights they have to sit so far back in the fenders that there is not much light thrown. it's the angle of the hood line that makes it diffecult. it works on 2ed gens though. if it were an all around mod that worked and people could afford it. guess what ?? they would be on the market. for 1st gens there are not many cool mods for tail lights/head lights if any.

 

maybe you would also need a pair of fogs to light the area right in front of the car. just a thought. it is a good point though. i would want to test them before putting them on the market.

 

400 bucks,,,thats not bad compaired to any other kit i mean i dont have 400 bucks but if i did id pick a pair or 2 up

that's the cost to MAKE the kit, in quantity. Then there's selling it with a margin of profit, which only becomes profit after you've sold enough to pay for:

-investment in headlight units
-custom machined brackets
-machinist setup fees
-twin bucks
-twin moulds
-fibreglassing/carbon fibre materials
-paint/primer
-packaging (can't just ship in any old box, or they might arrive crushed/broken)

...and so on, and so on...

so if you make, say, 50 units your cost is about $400 each - but you've spent $20,000. Then you sell them for $500 each, and wait until you've sold 40 before you make a dime in profit.

I think with the price of the average 1st gen hovering around the $2K mark, there just isn't going to be a large enough market for an aftermarket headlight kit that costs 25% of that. I'm not trying to rain on your parade, I just don't think you'd offset the tooling costs of a quality kit.

I am one of many that will never go with this style of lighting. I think the "bug-eyed" look is part of the charm of this car and I would never want to lose that.

That said, if/when you go forward with this idea, don't forget about aiming ability. There's my contribution to the idea

You could always try cutting away part of the bumper like this guy did (in response to not much light getting through)

Wow, that red car looks terrible. The white one isnt so bad. I also agree that the pop-up bug-eyed lights are one of my favorite things about the first gen. If the headlights were recessed it would look even more like a datsun 300zx. But, if some one were to make a kit, the only way they could pull it off, IMO as far as looks go, would be if you set back the headlights and had plexiglass over the top to maintain the lines of the car.

Go ask the third gen guys about pop-up versus fixed headlights, and see what kind of response you get. Most of 'em are just for show, and give crappy light patterns for actual night driving. Perhaps if you'd copy the Corvette C5R race car's setup, it'd work. The clear covers have bulges over the lights, and the lights are set up higher in the bucket.
