My son just got his license this morning. He passed with minimal errors in my former 85 GSL (back to 100% stock) He just dropped me home and he is now out to find nuts and bolts so we can install the roll bar (he aint driving without one).

He plans to take me for a spin in his blue RX-3 (my former chiquita banana) next Saturday

Congrats. I feel your apprehension. My son will be getting his license in about a year. He has his eye on the FC I have parked, since he knows the FB will never be his.
My daughter (now 20) never managed to understand the principal of letting out the clutch.

 

hehe my wife has yet to master that art and she has been driving the 7 for about 3 years now. Don't get me wrong she doesn't break it but it gives a little jolt every time she starts from a complete stop

 

At least she lets the pedal up. My daughter failed to grasp the need to let the pedal move off the floor................... Then couldn't understand why it wouldn't move, unless on a hill.

 

Congrats to your son............and stop hoarding all the Rx-3's. Looks like you have one for each member of the family. .

 

yeah i just got my license and my parents are the same way so i understand the worries if it makes u feel any better i already told me dad i bought my car as a toy...he still helped me fix it don't worry where not stupid with these cars because we know that they will kill us faster then any pos honda! o yeah and there alot more rare

I had to install a stud on the gas pedal which limits him to say below 90mph. I told him that there is a governor (speed limiter) in his FB like my 04 and 07 tahoes. On the other hand, he knows that his RX-3 is a fast but he cant handle the stiff clutch (4puck/3000 lbs pressure plate).

The insurnace for all 6 vehicles increased by $1K/year.

Man I wish I was your son with all of those rotary vehicles LOL. I'm sure your son will be smarter than most 16 year old kids who first get their liscense. Plus I'm sure he know's if he get's a ticket or get's into an accident in the FB he'll get one hell of a chewing from dad

 

Take him out to an auto-x, let him see whats its like to control a car. Then tell him if you ever see him trying that stuff on the street, he gets his bike back, no negotiating.

Congrats!...and I feel your impending apprehension. Oh, trust me, that sense of foreboding WILL come. I've been through this a couple of times and it doesn't get any easier. Remember all the stupid stuff YOU did as a kid? (Well, maybe you'd better not...)

Congratulations WackyRacer! Just tell your son that he is one lucky kid. Many of his classmates will have either a rusty Dodge Dart or a Dodge Colt to drive around at 16!

Congrats! i want to give you some words of encourgement but most of them have been said. if you beleive that you tought your boy right there is nothing to worry about!

 

i am shure you have taught him well and if you do see him do anything stupid give him his bike back...thats why i ride a bike for now trust me it works...good luck hope he stays safe

 

He learned how to drive on the FB and took the driving test with his FB. He drove it to school today but I followed him in my FB to ensure that he parks it in a safe area.

I just hope that he doenst take this for granted (driving vs taking the bus). Autocross, HPDE and drag racing are next. Hopefully this will get that itch off his system. Besides, without these hands-on, he may not get to drive the streetport.

How many driving schools or events has he done up to this point? Does he have any kind of jr comp license? My own personal belief is that a teen's first car needs to be a tank capable of destroying road hazards...if it can't knock down a brick mailbox and drive away, it's not tough enough to be a teen's first car......a tail happy 1stgen might not be too good a choice for a true novice driver which is why I ask if he's done any hard driving under tutelage...

 

True that. This first gen came with good parts from my collection of junks and donations from local members such as Rob @Rotaryshack for the complete stock exhaust) . Much cheaper than buying a used car for less than $2K which usually require a bottle of tylenol. lol

Time will only tell but I want/or the least is to expose him to legal racing instead of what most of us have done during our younger years.

Told him "to pack with raincoat and to pull out every time it feels good." And also, not to trust them females on pills

 

That last bit was the best advice a young man fresh with a car needs to know...lol

 

Naw,

the best thing to tell them is to keep the ones that swallow, can lay a proper coat of wax, and lastly have their share of the gas money
