I passed emissions !!

I passed emission!

For those of you that are trying to pass emissions, look at my story and see for your self.
I have an 85 gsl, no rat nest, street port engine, header, and DLIDFIS.
I had a brand new heavy duty cat installed and thought I could pass emissions (bad idea)
HC’s were 650-1000! I thought I hook up the air pump and just ran the air tube from the pump surpassing the AVC valve and directly to the cat. I went back to get it tested and the car read 5 HC’s at idle and 3 HC’s at high idle !!!! I could not believe my eyes, although the CAT is now glowing red now.

I’m hooking up a cheap A/F R gauge to see what I’m at (I know the wideband are better)

I do have a quick question I have not been able to find on the search.
On a cheap crappie worthless afr gauge, what do I need to tune it to at Idle???
14.7 At idle?? Or slightly rich?? Or slightly lean?? This is just to see what I’m at so I can tune the carb close to or pretty good. Or maybe just tell me what voltage I need to be seeing?? 400mv?? .5V??

Thanks and let me know if you passed too at what HC’s

with a stock setup, where the air pump air is going to the exhaust ports. adjust the idle mixture until it runs the best, then go a little richer.

cat likes that better

Most carbs run a bit rich at idle. My Mikuni manual doesn't go to stoich until 30% throttle. At idle, it shows a tad less than 10:1 afrs. If your cat is glowing red, then it's way too lean and will soon burn up/fail.

My REPU with 13b streetport and dellorto likes to idle in the 12.8 - 13.2 range. Yeah that's not stoich but it's where the motor runs smoothest and w/o studdering.

My 99 isuzu amigo v6 passed emissions recently with numbers that are 50 to 100% less than the average for the same make and model. Two readings were 0.0% PPM. Yeah, I keep my motor clean!

lol thats funny cause i had to do the same thing about a year ago. I bought the car and it had been sitting for 2 years, no cat, no emissions, or rats nest, it tested at 1360 hc and 2.0c, i ran the hose to a cat i welded on it, it tested 60hc and like .9c. I def recommend this to anyone who cant pass.

no, you adjust the idle mixture until it runs the best, and then a tad richer.

on the stock setup, the air pump air will throw off the o2 sensor reading, it will be way lean

I LOVE being EFI. Mine passed on the second try! I say second because on the first time, it turned out my gas cap failed. *L* New cap and numbers were damn low. Altho, that's the last time I take my car to that station. I compared the sheet to my first emissions sheet (2 year testing!) from another station and the number ranges and engine listing were different.

My O2 sensor is before the cat, so does that mean the gauge will read a tad rich?

I forgot that Austin does emissions testing....i hope San Antonio never has too ......isn't a car exempt after a certain number of years?

In Virginia, I know that if your car is registered as Antique, you're exempt from emissions. However, in order to be accepted as Antique, the car can only be driven for so many miles in a year.

the stock setup puts the air pump air into the exhaust ports, so it throws off the o2 sensor.

if put the air pump air into the cat, it wont
