Its not ABSOLUTELY necessary. You can do the swap without it, but will have to rig up something for the reverse lights. Other than that, its not necessary.

errr... I never knew that manual trannies had wiring harnesses. I didn't know they had anything electrical with them. Is there supposed to be a neutral saftey switch? If so, then mine definately doesn't have one that works properly. I've accidently tried starting the car in reverse 2 or 3 times >.< (First months that I had the car [had never driven a stick on a daily basis before]. I don't do it anymore, though )

All of my RX-7s have been able to be started in gear. It's almost a required function for *when* your clutch hydraulics die.
The wiring harnesses are identical in many respects, after all manual cars have the PRNDL-light connectors under the shift boot (aka the connectors people like to connect and blow the interior lighting fuse). The neutral switch and 5th gear switch are mainly emissions concerns, although the emissions testing performed in most states never goes up into 5th gear and so it's not that important anyway.
- Pete (my car's backup lights don't work, either...)

Its all bolt in, but is a total bitch since you have no working room. Its a good idea to try and get pedals from the same model year, and is much easier to keep the original bracket and change the actual pedals than to try and replace the entire bracket with the pedals. I learnt from experience, rx7doctor set me straight.

cool, thanks for the info. anything else i should know about a tranny swap, besides unbolting the old one and bolting the new one in (along with wiring up reverse lights)?

im pretty sure that it is slightly different for manual so you get a timing light and adjust it, the timing is the ignition, and the exact setting is in the manual

The neutral safety switch is on the automatic tranny equipped cars and keeps the engine from starting unless the AUTO tranny is in neutral. You just have to jumper the switch, you don't need a different harness. Don't make things harder than they have to be.
