I Need a speedo cable!!! (and have 1 question)

Hey guys,

I am very sorry to post this here but I am at a loss for what else to do. I know this should probably be in the classified section. I believe I have asked everyone on here that has is parting out a car or has parted out a car for the last month and keep getting the same answer. I need a speedo cable for the 83 5spd that is going into my 85 GS. The cable that was on my car was broken, and I still haven't been able to find a replacement. IF YOU HAVE A SPEEDO CABLE SEND ME A PM OR AN EMAIL!!!

As long as I have this thread started I am going to ask if there is any difference among speedo cables during the 1st gens 6 year run. Will I have any trouble finding a cable that will work on an 83 tranny and an 85 gauge cluster? I assume that everything would work fine, but you never know sometimes. Will everything with the speedo cable be compatable between 83 and 85? Thanks guys!

Jamie

I should still have the one from my 83 LE parts car, I'll try to dig it up for you.

Oh, yeah, there's no functional difference. The 84-85 auto speedo cables were about 4" longer.

I already checked VB. I'm not sure if they ever did offer a speedometer cable for the first gen rx's. In their most recent issue they only list speedo cables for 2nd and 3rd gen rx7s. I know that Mazda discontinued the part number, so that is probably why VB doesn't offer them anymore, if they ever did. I'm not sure about that one....

I know that VB did at least use to carry them. But, I believe they only had the ones from '81-'83 manual and the cable for the autos. I do know that the part number for the speedo cable is different between th '81-'83 and the '84-'85 models. If I remember right, the difference is in the number of teeth on the speedo drive gear. Since your transmission is an '83, I think you need the '81-'83 model. Have you checked local wrecking yards? I had to replace mine in my '84 and nearly all of the ones at the wrecking yard had been cut. I was lucky enough to find one, though.

I have the drive gear that fits into the tranny, I just need the actual cable. It should just twist onto the fitting on the outside of the drive gear right?
