I NEED to know how much a door weighs.

I'm in trial against the county, and the sheriff right now for.......well, long long story. Anyway, I need to know the weight of a series 2 door, with power window, with the glass in it. I know somebody has one laying around. The cop's trying to say the reason he slammed my door is because "Those doors are REALLY heavy, as far as car doors go." So...if somebody were to post the weight here, for me, I would really appreciate it.

well in his defense, the 7's doors aren't really the lightest as far as sports cars's doors are concerned. so how is a poice officer closing your door relating to the word taser? sounds like someone may have resisted arrest..

Heavy my ***. Almost everyone that rides in my car for the first time slams the door thinking it's going to be much heavier than it is. For a 2 door car they are light. For a 4 door car, not so much.

It does not matter that's why its on hinges, you could have a 200lb door and it would still move fairly easily, question becomes did you keep the door properly maintained? if yes then you have an argument because it is easy to prove the door was good condition (Moves easily) and that not much force was needed to close the door, why did the cop slam the door (I could not find the story)?

Uh, no. If that were true, an 8000 lb car would accelerate just as quickly as a 2000 lb car with the same engine - - they both roll on wheels!

A 200 lb door will take much more force to start moving than will a 65 lb door. And once moving with the same speed, the heavier door will impact much harder when it hits the frame. Just like with a sledgehammer versus a feather.

Mass is mass. Acceleration is proportional to mass and applied force.

F=MA; it's not just a good idea, it's the law...

Damn DD, you cut right to the chase. Nice detective work! I've got a GSL door out in my driveway, without the interior panel. I picked it up, it weighs about 40-60 lbs.

So what did this guy do to get the cops slamming his door anyway? I'm with you Dave, you gotta wonder about those unregistered rex offenders.

I'll take a scale out there and weigh it if someone posts up the story behind this one!

72.8 lbs. just the door with motor and glass and mirror

Now for the real treat i used a pulling fishing scale to test ho wmuch weight was needed to move the door
to open the door 13.65 lbs was needed after the latch had been sprung
but the door required 7.68 lbs to close on a flat surface the springs and hinge are in great shape and the roller is still striaght.

there is no reason anyone should have to throw a door shut, unless he/she is pissed off or trying to break something.

I think the hinge resistance is the secrete here. I'm talking about the part that has the arm and spring that has the notches that catch the door. It depends on how well this is working. I had a 1975 Monte Carlo back in the early 80's. You had to lift the door up just to get it moving.

Ever see in old moving where they would have a blast door in a cave that weighed multiple tons but could be moved very easy? This isn't dead weight but sprung weight. Some mechanism is assisting the door. Same principle with our car doors. Anytime a hinge is involved then there is sprung weight.

The spring detent does vary the force required to move the door from a stopped position, sure; it's job is to prevent the door from moving under too little force. But it takes only granny force to move it.

Also matters how recently the hinges and the detent cam and roller have been lubed.

So, what happened with this? I've tried searching the forum for the full story on this and come up with nothing. Anybody know what's going on?

In the donut's defense, so does the cop.

I think the guy slammed his door on the officer's leg and the officer is suing for a dislocated kneecap. He's saying that because it's a sports car, the door doesn't weigh enough to cause that kind of damage.

At least that's what I heard.

What was the officer's leg doing inside the swing of the door? Was he selling brushes or something?
