AK i just cheated on my car

was looking on craigslist and found a 83. i have an 84, so i was expecting something slightly slower but not really worlds apart. what i drove was much different.

this thing was from hell. it was thirsty. i dont understand. im so confused as to what happened. the car couldnt start by itself it had to be pushed started, and once they rolled me down the hill i flewwwwwwwww. The car had an exhaust leak, i think, cause the idle sounded like the car was underwater, and once you got up to about 4, 5 k rpm, it like...... i dont even know. its like a second engine kicked in. the car flew. and the clutch was different than mine. My shifter takes a few seconds for me to shift. i pull out of first really easy and then i have to apply some pressure into second, and after a second or less, it will drop into second. i mean its not a big deal but its noticeable. In this CL car, the shifter moved so freely. there was no resistance, and it felt so right, but so wroonnnggg. I layed in bed last night and couldnt sleep. i just thought about how different in a veryvery good way the car drove than mine.

so, heres the reason for this post.

1. my clutch. why does mine not flow so freely. its like im shifting with no clutch compared to the CL car. The previous owner of my car installed a "kevlar clutch stage 3." Is this somehow the reason my shifting isnt waterlike smooth?

2. I believe the car was turbo, but i didnt ask cause i was too caught up in the rapture. the body and interior would need a LOOT OF LOVE. but again, ive never driven ANY other rx7, nor a stickshift, nor anything with a turbo. Do turbos make a godlike difference? like i mean this car was somehow WAYYAWAWAWAWAYYY faster. i mean i felt like a horseman of the apocalypse when i drove off. literally there was fire on the road.

3. anyone else have stories like this?

Wow, for going and looking at a car on craigslist you really don't seem to know a whole lot about it.

Was this it? 1983 rx7

Just cause you have a GSL-SE doesn't mean its faster than some other 7 out there.

My guess is its your first experience in a carb engine car. That extra wooosh at 4K
was probably the secondaries starting to open up on it and the dizzy fully advancing.
Maybe it was a ported engine as well.

hmmm, im not really sure what your saying. either your saying i didnt ask much about it, or your saying i lack knowledge.

i guess both are kind of right.

the guy bought it off someone else, and he didnt know much about it. he didnt know about premix, premium gas, non synthetic ( not that its really proven or anything, thats just my opinion) and he didnt know anything other than it was an 84 with a rotory engine. so yeah i guess i dont know much about it either. what i do know, is the exhaust was freaking falling apart, and that brought a smile to my face. I dont know any other car that can go so fast in that condition. anyways yes, that was the car. i knew the latter part of your post also, but i didnt know if this was or wasnt a gsl, i dont know how to tell what package the car is, and the faq post 404'd :|

i spoke to the previous owner very briefly before this guy and she said she had the turbos for it or something like that....... so i dont know.

basicly, i bought a tv from this chick, and she had the car in her garage for 500. i called a few days later ready to buy it and she sold it to david, which if you check the link that farrell put up, well. david, wasilla, '83. 2+2=4.

any way to tell if it was ported other than asking the owner, which i did and he had no clue, or cracking the engine open? what would it sound like?

i have an 84, and the previous owner put a RB intake, im not sure if he bought the full holley or not. any idea how to actually tell if its from RB or stock? i can provide pics if you know what it looks like.

anyways can anyone talk to me about my transmission? CL car was like butter and mine is NO WAY as close to that in smoothness. mine is kind of nice in the sense that you cant somehow forget your going fifty, and then throw it into first when your going fifty, but its not nice in the sense that i know how to drive my car now, and its not pleasant fighting with my shifter everytime i shift.

sorry for my lack of mechanical

So David bought it for $500, but he wants $1000 for it, and he doesn't know **** about it?

David needs a kick in the plums.

well, david was friends with the chick, so most likely he got a homie hookup, but i agree. however, he did put all the glass and interior back in...... which consists of 2 seats lol. so i could say itd be fair if he put 100 bucks on the price he got it at.

Your transmission issues need a new thread and we can start discussing it. Might be simple or
might not be. I would guess its a combo of errors.

Since you know how much he paid for it, just offer him somthing that you think matches the
effort he put into it. I'd start at $600.00.

Sounds like your car just has problems, and you got in a car that operates as it should.... No offense dude.

I've been around the block on 70s/80s motorcycles (working on them owning them etc..), and I can tell you that people have a genral missconception that older vehicals that "don't work right".

Like a CB missfiring "oh that just cause its old" NO thats cause it don't work right. Its suposed to be tuned proper.

Tune your 7 well and you'll probably achieve the same results.

As for the clutch... when was the last time you bleed it?

Air in the clutch lines will prevent proper release, making shifting slower/harder/ impossible. So yeah, clutch could be it.

The first rx7 I bought was an 86 blue 148,000 miles bought it from some raunchy used car guy in San Jose Ca, He had RV's boats anything with a motor he sold, didn't have a "dealership" just a lot full of vehicles, anyway this car was my first rx7 I had so much excitment built up about this car I had been researching for a year or so at that time a good used fc was 7500-9000, I was 18 and saving up for a car found this fc it was a junker but it was fast, It made noise in 1,2,3,and 5th gear, it was a cool noise though my GF said it sounds like a race car, all stock though, I said well it is an RX7!!! the powersteering and air cond was pulled out easy to fix sparkplugs, even with the tranny noise it still was fast, tranny never gave out also I didn't have to depress the clutch to start it. I dont know if the gears were different but my current fc didn't ever run like my first, down shifting from 4th to 3rd was awesome pure powerband no problems I deliverd pizza in that thing burned hondas all day no prob thats when my rotary loved blossomed and have been in love ever since, reading this thread brought it all back
