I cut my roof off. *Pics*

Hey guys, I like trying new things, And I decided that Since I have a coupel cars, and my Rx7 is ALWAYS garage kept, and I only take it out on the sunny weekends that I would let a little Extra sun Shine in...Took me about 4 hours total time with a 12 dollar electric saw from Wal-Mart and 20 dollars worth of blades let me know what you think!

It looks sweet, but I would have guessed that would mess up the rigidity of the unibody???

I think unless you reinforce the underbody it will fold up if you ever have a wreck and will twist like a pretzel on corners, but it looks good.

looks pretty decent true targa huh?! you going to see if you can fab something up for a cover or you going leave it as is? you need to see about adding the strucural integrity back too the frame!!!! there was a thread about 4-6 months back about an under body brace for miata's that goes under the drive shaft i will see if i can find it for you.

Yeah man definatly look that up for me, Im going to Fabricate a Fiberglass roof for it sometime when Im not working all the time, I realize that If I get in a wreck my unibody is screwed but I am a safe driver and drive the car only when I want to go out and impress the ladies or something lol. Glad everyone likes it, I have never seen a targa Rx7 and I was impressed with how it turned out.

Post some close up pics. Did you remove the frame above the door glass? If you did the body is toast. You will notice this very quickly when the doors start sticking, and then won't open at all.

Don't get me wrong, I would have liked to have seen Mazda do a targe or t-top version of the 1st gens. However, the way you went about it has compromised the structural integrity of the unibody. You won't even need to be in an accident for it to fold up. It will do that from normal driving and the constant road impacts to the suspension.

If you want to save the car, either strengthen the floor pan, or weld the doors shut and ingress/egress the 'Dukes' style.

Safe driver or not, you cant always avoid the other idiot, that car is no longer safe, REINFORCE it or build a roll cage.....seriously.

I'm personaly not feeling it. But you need to do what those guys that chop the top and make a convertable are doing to strengthen the body.

Oh and dump the louvers. I think louvers look good when the top isn't chopped. But in your case it makes it look like those humpbacked camel crickets. Not very pretty.

Ditch the louvers add some body braces as stated before and it will look nice.

Reinforce. Other than that, to each his own. It looks good. I would just worry too much about rigidity. Also the louvers... look.... bad.... Yeah I just repeated what just about everyone else said, but its another opinion to add.

Dang I love the louvers! Lol, I have a welder for the weekend so Im going to make something along the lines of the thing the Miata owners were doing. I usualy only take the car out on the weekends to drive to the beach or something, nothing crazy. I do belive someone asked for a close up pic? Here it is, Thanks for all the feedback guys! keep it coming!

Also I posted a pic of the day It was finished bieng painted WITH NO LOUVERS lol, Notice I shaved the Antenna and the rear left and right panel lights off.

might as well scrap that car... that thing is toast unless you put a SERIOUS roll cage and chassis reinforcements.

installing a coupe of bars should be enough to keep it going. something with a good 1.5" diameter or thicker. and if i were you I would probably make like an X pattern on the top, like this is will help with keeping twisting to minimal when cornering. It you be really neat if you came up with how to get it mounted back on . But all in all everything looks good. I like how you used the door frame seals to hide the cut away metal look kinda like stock.

I kind of like the way it used to look. If you want a sun roof, get a GSL, there's plenty around and you wouldn't have had to butcher that poor thing. Nice looking 7 though, even with its top cut off. Now what are you going to do with it?

Well I bought this car off ebay for 1k cash, Guy told me it ran fine. Im in Tampa and he is in Miami about 250 miles...So I drive my Mustang with a couple of my friends to go pick up the car....Chit cat with him for a bit and make small talk,

So I start driving, relize theres about a half gallon of gas left, when I take it to the gas station it starts smoking really bad, smells like burnt wire, then we cant get the hood open, so I call the dude and he doesnt pick up his phone at first but I finally get a hold of him, so he says it does that sometimes..im like great, I just got F*cked over hard core, So I drive the car 250 miles home with No License Plate. Here is what was wrong with the car.

Bad Floater in the Stock Carburator.
Would stall out of the Choke wasnt out all the time.
Whole in the Catalytic converter that was pouring flames into my engine bay (the smoke).
Cracked Windshield
Bondo Job from Hell EVERYWHERE.
Rats nest leaked like a mother.
Antenna was broke.
Inside lights didnt work. (Dash,Gauges)

Thank god the clutch didnt go out on me, or the rx7 would probly be sitting on that same road! haha jk, anyways, here are the pics when I got it home the next day....

But I have fixed all those problems and spent alot of hours sanding, fiberglassing, bondoing this baby up to perfection, It has come along way from where it was as you can tell. The owner before it apparently didnt know how to take care of a car.. :-(

I personally like this incarnation, and if you like it more power to you for gettin' **** done.

There'll always be haters, but do what you like. If you die in the process then oh well. You'd be doing what you like and the haters will enjoy seeing your death. Everyone wins!
