i could have really fucked something up

i changed my starter. it wasnt exactly the same. it had the two bolts the power and the ground. i did those the same. there was one more thing i dont know what to call it, it is a thin piece of copper that another wire clips to. on my original starter it came straight out, then turned. on the new starter, it just came straigt out. i connected everything the same as it was when i took it off. i reconnected the battery and the positive end started making a sizzling sound, and it smelled like sulfer. i am almost positive that i connected everything back up the same.

Sulfer smell sounds like you have corrosion badly. Double cheack those cables, they're cheap and easy to fix, and work awsome when clean.

i disconnected the line that just clips to the little metal thing, reconnected the battery, got power. i reconnected the clip. got power. i turned the key to start, the starter clicked, and i lost all power.

New battery cables should seriously be considered. It makes a huge difference!

I got a starter from O'Rielly about two years ago that had the starter solenoid wired reverse polarity. It did the same exact thing, what happens is that it burns out right away (your battery was over loaded and off gassed some sulfur) then everytime you turn the key it kicks back into the burnt out section and won't pull back (no power). I figured it out, and swapped the solenoid off of my old starter on just to make sure. Wired like original it worked fine. So I took there's back and had them get me another one. I had to check it and turn the solenoid over also before install.

This is what has happened to you. Either replace the solenoid or the whole starter.

Theres 3 connectors on the starter, and none of them is ground. Ground is thru the starter casing to the trans housing. The big thick wire is power to turn the starter motor. The thinner wire is to power the solenoid, and the copper braided wire (actually a fuseable link) is for the sub zero system. you dont need to connect that one. My guess is that you mixed up the sub zero and the solenoid wire.

Wow thats a first. Never heard of that happening. Easy to check though. Take it off and bring it back where you bought it lemonade. Let them test it. Thatll tell the story.

Damn it, I'd wrote a decent explanation and what to do now post earlyer just before I went out to shoot pool and consume alcohol. It must not have stuck when I sent it up. Oh well I'm to intoxicated to think tech at this point. In any case like good ol' Carl said take it back, then just to make sure you don't get stuck with another mistakenly wired starter have them test the next one before you leave.

Hey lemonade your colorful post title brings up some interesting similar threads. None have anthing to do with starters.

"We're all pretty fucked." flamin-roids
"I fucked myself up good respraying my truck" GOTPAM?
"roxy is fucked up" Zack_Daddy
and last but not least
"Fucked up ****" Matt22

I've never seen a web site that allows post titles like these, kind of a screwed up situation really. You guys should watch the language. LOL
