Unhappy I Blew the coolant hose that goes....

Hey all,
I blew the coolant hose that goes from the oil cooler to one of the iron. I happened 2 weeks ago and while i was sitting at a red light i heard phssst and steam coming from the hood. So i quickly shut the engine down, and waited till the light turn green which was about a 5 min wait with the engine off. When i had the green i restarted the engine to get the car off the road which i only drove it 10 feet and pulled off. Now the temp gague went to the other end of the normal range but it did not go over it. The hose has been replaced 2 days after it happened.

Now I am just wondering if any damage was done to the engine because this car was given to me by grandma. She bought the car brand new in 84 it is a GS. The engine starts like normal quick and easy, it idles great, the power normal, it has no prob zinging to redline, oil pressure is good at about 50 psi at idle and about 75-80 2k and over, the temps read just past low normal mark. Also the car has about 77k on it. This is my first car so im just worrying about if its going to crap out on me now that this problem happend.

Sorry about the long post.

Hey Man... You did exactly the right thing shuting the engine down while at the light. If everything seems normal I would imagine everything is OK. These engines are not that sensative towards overheating

One thing that I would suggest is that you go ahead and change ALL the hoses. If one broke..chances are the other hoses are in the same condition that caused that one to break and the others could possibly break soon. The last thing you want to happen is be caught in a situation were you hve to drive the car any more distance to be safe than you have too...

Best of luck!

You would know if it was done. When I overheated my first 12a there was INSANE amounts of smoke pouring out of it when it was started up until it stopped running completely. Pulled the header off and coolant literally streamed out of the engine. Hopefully you are ok, I would take a good look at all your coolant lines now and replace any that are questionable or soft. Overheating is the devil to these motors.

The usual cause for that line to blow is due to oil dripping onto it from the oil cooler. If that is the case here, then go the extra step and fix the oil leak too...

^ Exactly, from your description I agree that you probably didnt damage the engine. Ive lost 2 engines from that hose popping. At the very least replace the rubber hoses under the cooler and fix the leak like Ken said. Its 4 orings that youll need to do it.

Oh and welcome to the forum.

I think my coolant o-rings are...

are bad now, because now i had to fill the rad today, And what makes me think that is now at start up and while warming up it has alot of steam coming out of the tale pipe. And there is no coolant leaks on the outside of the engine, But my car does not smell like its burning coolant. What could it be?

If it is the o-rings, How hard is it to rebuild the engine? I don't think it will cost to much because no major parts to be replaced due to the low miles on it. Also is it alright to drive the car as long i kept the coolant level up? I don't have much money right now.

Thanks for any help.

If it is the orings in the intake that are leaking, then its not a big deal to fix. I would check those first. Get a set of orings and an intake gasket, should take less than an hour even if you're not good at spinning wrenches.

When I first bought my car, I had only 3 days before two of the coolant hoses under the oil filter got shredded. I replaced them, only to find out the cause was the two O-rings under the filter were leaking. All in all not much damage was done, because I replaced the hoses and O-rings quick, if you didn't overheat it I wouldn't worry about it

Sorry for not posting in a long time. I have been keeping an eye on the water level for the past 3 weeks or so and it has not gone down at all from the inital top off. So im very happy now that its not burning coolant. Yay!! But i did notice my makes alot of steam during the first startup of the cold *** morning, freezing my nuts off. Just because it is rich right on warm up. After that it does not steam at all. Im just gald my car runs so good. I love this little sports car.

That's typical on cold morning cold starts with the choke.
