I Am Lost
I Am Lost
I have no idea whats goin on inside this little '79 i have;
A couple of weeks ago i had it running and it would idel, i even drove, then had Dizzy securing prob. fixed that, now i cant even get the car to stay running with my foot on the gas. i didnt change anything but the timming, than when i got tired of trying different locations, i got onto the idler screw, ( previouse problem on this carb). The car will fire up every.....30th try or so it seems but will only run for a moment or 2 then die. I dont see how it could be fuel since nothing had been changed from its prior running state, and i even tried putting a better cap on the dizzy. im not at the shadetree mach. point of throwin random things at it then seein if it will work.
any direction anyone can comeup with will be very appreciated

If the only thing you changed was the timing, I would go back and doublecheck your work on that. You stated that you had it idleing before and it was driveable. Whatever happened when you fixed the 'dizzy securing problem' may have resurfaced and your timing is off just enough to not keep it running.
Also, as William pointed out, pull your plugs and see what they look like. If wet with gasoline, you probably have timing set too late to get a spark while you're at max compression. Ideally, you'll need some advance to ensure that it's sparking a mixture that will ignite properly and spin the rotor to the exhaust phase.
If nothing else has changed, I'd go back to where you started. HTH,

If they don't have them in stock, they can order them and it only takes a day or two.
ok, I had to order a set of NGK's from Orielys; got them today and they arent like the ones i have in the car now, they are shorter and have prongs,( this is like the plugs in all my other engines) the ones i have in the car right now are flat on the top and marked T & L witch i assume is trailing and leading, i tried threading the shorter ones in but they just keep going into the bllock and my socket wont go past the lit on the block, will this cause problems? im so afraid ill messs this car up,
I just wanna drive it so bad

I have pics of the plugs but they are too big;
wwilliam54, the ones that are in my other engine dont go all the way in, do i have to thread them all of the way into the block?
by the way the ones in my car are NGK BUR7EQ
the ones i bought are NGK BR7ET

some plugs have the socket high, some low
the new ones are low, but they still need to be threaded all the way in
get a socket and grind down the outside so itll fit in between the plug and the lip
ok, I took the new plugs back, and turns out when they actually pay attention to what you say, they might just have what u actually need in stock. NGK BUR7EQ and NGK BUR9EQ spark plugs are flat on the top and have a longer sleeve, to get past the lip that is apparently on some year 12a? its not on a '79 engine ill tell you that much. and doesnt seem to be on what i was told was an '81 engine either. they dont have these plugs under any sertain application, event thought the 7s are marke T and the 9s are marked L and the box has "(something foreing) RE" on it, but im gunna go try these and does anyone know what year 12a I have in my car because i have no clue.

That looks like the kind I'm running also. They're the ones listed for the car at AutoZone and fit without the need for any special socket.
I think it was the 79 and 80 engines that did not have the spark plug boss around the hole. Mazda later decided to add it to keep people from using the wrong spark plugs since if you do manage to use one that is threads in too far the electrodes can come into contact with rotor and something gets ruined. 81-85 have the boss.

Yup, first one is not the correct one for the FB but the second on looks too short also. If you mix the first one's long body with the second one's end (four prongs) then you have the one that I am running which is probably the same as the one shown above (BR8...)
I'll pull mine just to make sure and repost tomorrow (already dark here).

Wrong plugs.... Maybe you should say they were not the manufacture recommended spark plug for his year of car.
Why, cause I run 3rd generation trailing plugs on my leading side, maybe not the ideal plug for putting around in the city. But when you are out doing a track day they sure like to REV IT UP.............
1981-85 (12A) Both BR8EQ-14 is the correct factory recommended spark plug.

Those are NGK's Stock#- 3559 Leading
5483 Trailing
Use the NGK stock #2329 - (BR8EQ14)
You can use these plugs for 79-85 12a & 13b.

Ok, pulled my plugs. I actually don't have NGK in there like I had thought. I have the Denso W25EDR14's installed. They still look like the BR8's though and they run great with no problems and fit without the need of any special sockets
