i hate to tell you. you need a rebuild.

by the sounds of things you lost your coolant seal. which leaked into the chamber creating all ths smoke, and soaking your plugs.

check out the FAQ. there is a thread by kentetsu about a sealant that beyond all science worked. i figure its worth a shot if the alternative is a rebuil.

There's a tiny chance that you might have lost one of the o-rings on the intake manifold, and that's letting coolant into the engine... but greater odds are you've had a coolant seal rupture, as noted above. Manifold O-ring failures usually leak out as well as in.

I'd follow Perfect and Kentetsu's advice, but just make sure you don't run the engine too long with a major coolant leak; continuously steam-cleaning the protective oil film off the inside of your engine while it runs will eventually make your rebuild a lot costlier.

And don't let it sit there for a long time until you get around to it. This can lead to your internals getting rusty and that's obviously a bad thing. You might be able to pour some oil into the spark plug holes to keep things from rusting if your not going to run it for a while.

No reason to let it sit, this is a very simple procedure. Pay 4 bucks for a bottle of Alumaseal, pour it into the radiator, and let the car idle until the problem goes away. You can do this on your lunch hour.

there is a running 12a for sale in the 1st gen section for like 175 swap that in while you build a massive streetport engine out of the one youve got now!

The alumiseal can be mixed with water, antifreeze, donkey doo, or just about anything else. Also, no need to drain and flush afterwards, just leave it in there if you want...

I'd go like this:

1) Try the Alumaseal
2) If that doesn't work, drain the antifreeze and check if it's an intake manifold gaset issue, or something really unusual like an intake manifold crack; you're gonna have to replace that gasket if you rebuild anyway, and you could get lucky.
3) No joy there, bite the bullet and do a rebuild

Pretty much the only places anti-freeze can get into the motor is the intake maifold gasket o-rings, and the water seals between the housings.

Kentetsu, how many miles since the coolant fix? I just did it on mine and it worked great. I hope to get a few more miles out of the engine before it's rebuild time.

I think I'm getting close to 7,000 miles on the repair now. Still no issues.

This trip to NC will be the true test, about 800 miles each way I think plus 5 days of running the tail of the dragon while I'm down there.

Zoom freaking Zoom!

Glad to hear the repair worked for you too. I like hearing the results on this. I think you're about the 10th or 12th that I've heard back from, and so far there have been no horror stories, just successes....

If it stops working, just do it again until you can rebuild your motor or find a running core.

Wacky, are you hitting the bottle again? He's losing coolant, not oil...

Well, we made it back from North Carolina just fine, and the car was perfectly behaved the entire time. Put on over 2,000 miles in five days and never used a drop of coolant.

And yes, all of you nonbelievers can tell me that my cooland seals are shot and I need to rebuild it, and you would be entirely correct. But in the mean time, I'm too busy driving the hell out of my car to worry about swapping out motors.

It's like saying "you have cancer, and we should operate on it to remove it because that's what we do in these cases, but in the mean time it will get no worse and you'll never have any symptoms of any kind". Is that really even a problem anymore at that point?

Look at it as a warning shot to start saving up money and parts against the day.

If we keep driving our cars long enough, we'll all eventually need (another) rebuild. Only question is when.

It's just too bad that there's not an equivalent trick for oil seals, that works as well as this apparently does.

Its the same thing with an oil seal. A quart of Lucas in the oil will tame most oil control ring problems. And again, to fix a bad oil control ring you need to rebuild the motor. But if you can control it in some simple way, is it still necessary to rebuild for just a bad oil seal?
