how to you remove the dash center vents???

ive search various threads on removing the dash center vents but no success, other member claim that the dash pad? needs to be removed to get those center dash vents out, anybody ever remove them while the dash is still in the car?
any help would be great because i need to pull them to help mount my new custom gauge holder that i welded together

If the rest of the behind the dash stuff is still in place I think it would be impossible to remove them w/o removing the dash. They are held in with screws that screw into the dash pad from the backside.

What year/model do you have?

What dash vents are you referring to? Are you referring to the vents above the heater controls?

In the FB, you can reach them by removing the stereo panel and removing the screws holding the vents in (they're only accessible after removing the panel).

You do *not* need to remove the dash to take the panel out.

1) Remove the shifter cover panel (where the shifter boot is) by pulling gently up on it; it snaps in place with small plastic tabs, but pops out easily enough if you're gentle with it.

2) Once it's up you'll see a couple screws holding the bottom of the stereo panel in place. Remove and place them aside.

3) Pull off the temperature and fan control *****.

4) If there are nuts holding the temperature and fan controls in place, remove them as well.

5) The stereo panel should pull off.

You may also have to twist and pull out the bulbs for the ashtray and temp/fan controls.

Once the stereo panel is free, turn it over and you'll see the screws holding the vents in place. Remove them, take out the vent unit (it's a single piece) and reverse the steps to reinstall the stereo panel and shift cover.

im talking about the dash vents, the vents that are in the dash not in the center console, im wondering on removing the 2 side by side vents that are in the dash, also my dash and center console are both from an 82' rx7 just saying.....so general opinion is that you have to remove the whole dash?

I think if you use very, very flat piece of flexiable metal, you can place it on the top (or bottom) of the vent and tilt it out. I think there a nub that fits ina depression in the center that needs to be pushed up with the flat piece of metal.

I think the vent grates (the parts that move side to side) snap into a housing at the outer ends but are capative in the center, by a small plate held in with 2 screws. This whole assembly is what actually tilts up and down and is in turn held in with 4 screws, 2 in the top and 2 in the front. I can post a picture this evening.

You may be able access the vents after stripping away a bunch of things under the dash. How much, is probably directly related to how small of a child you can find to reach up there and perform the task.
