how to use 2nd gen coils

I have been seeing alot of people are using 2nd gen coils with the first gen distributer. Do I use the igniters on the coil or dist.? Plus which coil pack does evryone use leading or trailing?

Thanks

Aaron

use the leading second gen pack. The basic mod just uses the stock 1st gen coil thats located in the distributor, and eliminates the 2nd gen. ignitor (in the coil).

heres my write-up on the basic 2GCDFIS mod.

Theres also a new version of that mod called the Transistor Trick that keeps the 2nd Gen ignitor as well as the 1st gen. It requires purchasing or making a Transistor setup to stick inbetween the 1st gen ignitor and the 2nd gen one. This allows your stock 1st gen ignitor to fire the 2nd gen ignitor, thus making a much more powerful spark.

The choice is up to you, the normal mod will give you a significant increase in spark power for minimal cost, while the Transistor Trick will give you an even MORE significant spark for a little extra coin (though its still a very cheap mod)

The leading FC coil can be used only in a direct fire situation, its an alternative to running 2 aftermarket coils. Its well worth it too,as the FC coils are very powerful.I believe you can make the FC ignitiors work, but its even better to just eliminate all the factory ignitors by running an MSD6 on the leading system.Youll also pickup capacitive coil charging and multiple sparks at lower RPMs.

The trailing coils cant be used on an FB engine because the FB distributor and ECU lack the ability to seperate the T1 and T2 signals.
The directfire setup is great for an FB,it gets the power to the leading plugs cleanly and it will "wasted-spark" some of the remaining fuel at the back of the combustion chamber.Mazda ran this setup from the factory on all 86-up rotaries for a reason.
But,you have to retain the cap and rotor to properly distribute the trailing sparks.Using the now empty L sockets on the cap,to distribute the T sparks, will utilize a carbon button in the cap,and eliminate an airgap in the T system.

I've found that there is NO upgrade to the FC stock coils. (There's a thread I started in the 2nd gen section.)

The 2nd gen goils are the best you can get.

Just a rumor I might pass along. MSD is becoming more involved in the import thing correct. Well I read somewhere that they may be designing coils to fit a fc. If this is true that would kick ***. But its just something I read. Dont know if there is anytruth to it.

well, i tried all sorts of **** with ignition when i went turbo.... the FC coil pack setup didn't work very well. i got the msd box and ran it thru the stock distirbutor and haven't looked back.

if you really want this sort of setup, do what Hyper4mance2k did and get the msd dual post coil pack and rock an msd box thru it. you can not get a better spark!

Thanks for the quick info I think I like the duel post MSD coil easier. I am going for simple on this project. That was kinda what I thought the 2nd gen coil would do. But when I looked at them the leading coil seemed small without the igniters.

the msd is expensive from what i have heard and if your not going to turbo it i think the TT would be fine. i just made my own this week it took about 20 bucks worth of stuff from radio shack and then you just got to get a 2nd gen leading coil with igniter which can be gotten cheap from ebay or this site. i have heard a lot of good things about the TT so im trying it first, plus it seemed a little easier for me, the circuit i made only took about a hour. and if you can following instructions its easy. just look in the 1st gen archives for the TT trick it shouldbe near the top. good luck

Thanks for the link. What would be involved in useing the whole 2nd gen coil dist setup or does it need to use the computer? Or would I not be gaining enough to make it worth it because I already have a MSD box and coil.
