How to tell what to replace in a rebuild??

Im all hot & bothered now to crack open this 12A spare (blown seals I was told) that came with my race car.

However, I see rebuild kits from $250-$800.

Dang!

How do I know, what I can and cant re-use?

Check your manual.... you *do* have a manual right? I hope you weren't going to tear down an engine without at least a Heynes in hand. Always replace all the rubber seals, and use guages to check the other parts for wear. Change whatever doesn't meet spec. Change the apexes. You're probably looking at the higher priced rebuild kit.

Blown seals..........HMMMM

If it overheated or if coolant got in your motor then it not worth rebuilding at all, since you will not have a rebuildable core, buying a rebuilt engine is going to cost you more$$$$ too.

Rotor housings, have you check the price of those lately??

DANG!@!!

When you do a rebuild allways go by the book and take your time.
Just in case you should buy a rebuild video so you know what proer tools you will need .

Yup..got the manuals (hanes and cd based) ..got the atkins..they make it look way too easy.

Its a 12a, I doubt it was overheated, as Ive yet to get the current motor hot at all on the same chassis/radiator that motor lived with.

It had 60k on it, and one year of racin.

Well..so much for this motor.

1/3rd of the chrome is missing on the rear rotor housing..

Ive got two motors I can get my hands on..we'll see what theyre like.

FWIW..whoever had this motor apart last was a moron. Missin a # of bolts that just shouldnt be missing. Four of the long motor bolts were rusted to heck as well inside the motor.

Overall, beautiful motor, dead easy to tear apart and it appears..assemble again.

The steel plates SEEM ok, just have to look up the specs for wear from the side seals..see how much I can lose there.
